Scholarships that come after the acceptance package

S1 received the fat envelope yesterday. It came with the $1000 Dean's Scholaship and an invitation to the Commonwealth Honors College. We are very happy.

Looking at the scholarship website, he seems to qualify for the Academic Honors Scholarship because of his first place award at the Mass Science Fair. He also qualifies for the National Merit Scholarship - a full-ride scholarship - because of his NMF status.

I have a few questions. Is the AHS guaranteed as long as he sends in a copy of his 1st place award certificate? Is AHS renewable? What does he have to do to get the NMS? Finally, can these scholarships stack?

Thanks for the help.

Congrats!

I do not know about the AHS. But I am a NMF and I called admissions earlier this year about the NMS. The woman I talked to on the phone said that they select a small number, usually only 3-4 students, to receive the full-ride scholarship. She said that a committee selects the candidates in the middle of April based on their qualifications, and after Massachusetts supplies them with a list of national merit finalists in the state. She said I didn’t need to do anything to apply for the scholarship. She said that if I wanted to, I could fax a copy of the NMF letter to them, but that it wasn’t necessary because they would receive the information in April anyway and it wouldn’t affect my chances.

My understanding is the scholarships stack, but I could be wrong. I know, however, that you cannot use two tuition waivers (I qualify for the Adams and Zoplik). But I received the Dean’s scholarship as well and plan to use it in addition to the tuition waivers. I think that if you get a full-ride though, you don’t get to stack that with anything else.

Thanks, sciencegal. Congrats to you too!

3-4 students seem to imply most NMF admits won’t get the NMS. I called Admissions today and was not able to reach a person who’s knowledgeable on this. The lady I talked to took down my questions and promised to get back to me next week. Do you know if you need to put UMass Amherst down as your #1 choice with NMSC to be considered for NMS?

I believe you do not, but you should verify this, because I’m not entirely sure.

FYI - UMass/Amherst is on break next week. I do not know if the administration goes to standby mode, but most of the school does.
