Scholarships

Michigan doesn’t have ED. You both were accepted EA.

Just wondering @krmcollege and @Yrtogo , what was your income bracket? I believe U of M has sample aid packages they sent out - did they not coorelate with your incomes?

My D’s friend got the Bell about a week ago, but she is still not decided whether to go blue.

I was just notified by mail that I received a $10000/ year scholarship. In-state LSA EA applicant.

@tspro2014
Congrats! Mind to share which scholarship is it?

@billcsho It doesn’t have a specific name (which I was also sort of confused by). Last year, my friend received the same scholarship which awarded him the same amount. PM me if you’d like more info I guess.

@tspro2014
That is a pretty good amount. The Engineering Scholarship of Honors is only $8000 per year for in state.
Did you receive the Amaizin’ Blue Preview invitation? If so, are you planning to go?

@billscho I applied to LSA under Early Action, not CoE

I received that $10,000/year scholarship today as well. I applied for the Bell Scholarship, which is $10,000 a year, but it didn’t say if that was the award that I got. @tspro2014 did you apply for that scholarship as well? @billcsho did your friend’s D actually get a paper stating that the scholarship was for the Bell?

Has anyone out of state in lsa heard anything about merit scholarships? Trying to figure out if “no news is bad news”

@leonarda
My D’s friend got an e-mail and then a mail the following day from Bell. Bell is not directly under UMich, so what you get is from LSA. My D also applied to Bell but got no response. Since her classmate got it, it is not likely there would be another one going to the same high school as there are only 4-7 awards per year.
Did you get the Amaizin’ Blue Preview invitation too?

@tspro2014
I know you are not applying to CoE but LSA, I am just saying the scholarships for CoE is less in amount although it has a slightly higher CoA. I have read there are around 200 LSA Scholarships per year, but I am not sure how many Engineering scholarships per year.

I see. The Bell Scholarship notification date is still open until March 15, but it’s very unlikely that they haven’t sent out the award notices already. I don’t think that I got that invitation either; was it via snail mail or email?

@billscho I understand what you’re trying to say now. I actually had no idea how many scholarships LSA actually awarded. My friend’s mother (whose son won a scholarship last year) has told me that they give out only 25. Do you maybe have a source which tells the number? I’m sort of confused. Also, I’m unsure of how many scholarships CoE awards, but I can definitely say that the award amount is less than that of an LSA award. Also, what is the Amaizin Blue Preview invite? I’ve never heard of it, nor have I received an invite.

@leonarda I actually had no idea that we were to specifically apply for the Bell scholarship. I thought it was simply awarded based on your initial application. Can you explain the process if you know?

Bell is a different scholarship for science and engineering that you need to apply separately. Amaizin’ Blue Preview is a special campus visit for students received major scholarships. The LSA scholarship webpage has the information, but not all recipient got the same amount. It ranged from 1000 to 20000. It think the 20000 Max is for post, in state should be Max at 10000.

@billcsho since your daughter was invited, did she receive a scholarship? And does this mean that the maximum in-state scholarship possible (aside from Stamps)?

@tspro2014 Yes, she got the engineering one. I think other than the very big ones like Shipment and Stamps that give near full ride to very limited students, these are main scholarships for LSA and Engineering freshmen.

Is the Engineering scholarship the same or different than the Jean Fairfax scholarship? DS received Fairfax, but not an engineering. Are they still awarding engineering?

I’m struggling as a mom here. DS was accepted EA to LSA. 4.76 gpa/4.0, 35 ACT (twice). Equally high SAT. Student leader, sports, natl merit finalist. No scholarships. What does a kid have to do?!?!

As far as my understanding goes, U of M is notorious for giving out very little money. Scholarships are hard to come by and sort of random. Quite frankly, I was taken aback when I got one. I don’t think anyone can really EXPECT to win a U of M scholarship unless they are top 100 STEM applicants, Intel/ Siemens finalists, have done stunning community service, etc.
