Scholarships???

Hi!
I am from NY but really want to attend a southern school. My parents don’t want to pay out of state tuition for a state school though. Does anyone know good websites to get separate scholarships from?
Thanks!!

@Lindseyk615

Do you have an excellent ACT or SAT score? Do you have an excellent GPA?

Will your parents pay the amount of an instate NY school for you to attend college elsewhere? In other words, will they pay $20,000 a year for you to attend college in the south?

What year are you in High School?

Then you are stuck.

Most of the large scholarships come from the schools themselves. Either they are need-based or based on merit. Your scores are not strong enough to get merit scholarships. Your parents would need to be really low-income to get very limited federal dollars at the most $6000 per YEAR. You can borrow $5500.
The state schools would not fund you with their state dollars.

Outside scholarships rarely pay for 4 years. They tend to be really small and don’t cover much in the way of tuition.

The best scholarships (four years) come directly from the school. Good outside scholarships are highly competitive.

Some Texas schools grant In State Tution to OOS students that get a certain level of scholarships this easy at UTD, attainable at A&M and difficult at UT Austin. If you can get National Merit many Southern schools will give full tuition or full rides so OOS doesn’t matter.

Some Midwest schools give in-state rates to OOS if you’re at a certain ACT score, so do some hunting to see if some southern ones do too. Or if you can find a private with sufficient automatic merit to make it affordable.

Are you parents qualifying income wise for the Excelsior scholarship?

That would be a good deal (tuition would be covered) at a SUNY or CUNY.

There are some schools like U Toledo, WVU, UA, UAH, UNM that give generous merit for high stats, but most likely not more than full tuition.

Travel costs will also have to be figured in, and possibly health insurance.

I feel this aspect of attending college out-of-state is often overlooked. Since school holidays are peak travel times, it can be very expensive to fly home.

OP - Go to a site like Kayak and price a round-trip ticket from the colleges you’re interested in. See if there are direct flights or if you have to layover someplace. Add travel expenses to your cost of attendance.

U Maine has the flagship match program.

It benefits you if you are from a state with low instate public university costs.

It doesn’t benefit you if you live in Pennsylvania or Illinois.

What are your test scores and GPA?

How much WILL your parents pay each year for an INSTATE college? $25k per year? ASK THEM!!

Looking for “scholarship websites” for your situation is a waste of time. What good does a couple thousand dollars for ONLY freshman year do for you??? You likely wouldn’t get enough and if you did, you’d have to leave after frosh year.

The best scholarships for FOUR years are from the colleges that offer them. Tell us your stats. Are you retesting soon?

You’re going to need a higher SAT. Take the ACT as well.

Mock Trial…have you looked into UA’s Forensic debate group? They have some scholarships as well.

UGA won’t give you merit.

Stats not likely high enough for Tulane.

Hi, Thank you for responding.
Tulane is my far far reach because my high school is making me apply. I just got in to UA today and will definitely look into it. Im hoping to get at least a 1300 on my SAT tomorrow, I think that should help.

Also sorry I forgot to put it before, they said like 100K for 4 years but will go either up a little but not a lot.

I also should have 52 college credits entering in from AP and DE classes so that should help if I can finish my undergrad in 3 years and start my masters early.
