Does anyone know of any good oos scholarships, merit or otherwise? None of the instate schools interest me and I would love to go oos but it’s just so expensive. I’m not top 10 in my school or a national merit scholar and need help finding scholarships that I can actually obtain and would cut down costs. I’m interested in going to an urban school if possible but would need some major aid to do so. Any suggestions? Any info would be helpful, thanks
The best scholarships are ones awarded to you by colleges where you get accepted.
What are your SAT or ACT score, and what is your GPA? And what year in HS are you?
Also…what state is your state of residence? Seriously…your family pays taxes to support your instate publics…you should at least consider them.
When you say you need “major aid”…is this because you are low income, or is this because your parents don’t have sufficient funds to cover your OOS costs?
How much will your parents contribute each year for college? If you don’t know…ask. And this is without needing to take loans for them.
Give us your stats…maybe someone here can suggest some comments where you would get sufficient merit aid to meet your family price point.
Unfortunately, the money tends to favor those students who are National Merit or top 10.
Outside scholarships don’t give much and they don’t supply you with needed dollars for four years of school.
As @Thumper1 said, the best scholarships come from the colleges themselves and they fund you for 4 years, IF they want you.
Your instate public universities have already been funded by your parents.
No one cares where you get your diploma. Once you are done, you can become employed in whatever state you want.
I’m from California, and we like to have students like you because:
1). We don’t give you a dime.
2). We triple your price of tuition/fees.
3). Those fees you pay will help fund another California resident student.
It’s called a “cash cow”.
Maybe.
What is the OPs GPA and SAT or ACT score? Without knowing that, it’s impossible to judge his or her merit aid potential.
I’m only a sophomore right now and I haven’t taken my official ACT. However, on my practice ACT I got a 30. My unweighted GPA is a 3.6 and my weighted is a 4.2 . So, about average. I’m also an IB student, although I’m unsure just how much that affects my stats for colleges. I’m not totally against going instate, I have found a couple that have interested me. The University of Tennessee Chattanooga for instance. An out of state school that interests me is the University of Alabama Birmingham, they have a good med program and I want to become a health professional. I believe they have a good merit scholarship for oos students, up to 18,000 but I am unsure. Any advice?
Improve your ACT score (over 33, 34, 35) and your GPA. Your IB diploma hasn’t started so you are not an IBD candidate yet. The IBD is great prep for college, not anything so great in the application process if you cannot keep up a higher GPA. What is your home state? Sometimes it is not worth walking away from a good home state advantage to lesser options OOS. Have you been to Alabama? Tennessee?
Run NPCs at schools, know your FAFSA EFC at least for giggles.
What area of health care?
@Sybylla thanks for the info. I live in Tennessee and have visited Birmingham multiple times. I’m interested in becoming an Audiologist. When I begin my IB classes in the fall, do you know how much it will affect my GPA? Depending on how good my grades are.
For really good merit aid, you need to bump up that ACT score to above 33.
I’m a speech pathologist so I have some good knowledge about your field of interest. As you know, audiology requires advanced degree after your bachelors. You are looking at an AuD program…doctorate of audiology…and that takes at least several years. I would urge you to go to the American Speech Language Hearing Association website to get more information about this course of study. You absolutely want your advanced degree to be at an ASHA accredited university.
Audiology advances degrees are seldom fully funded. So you want to keep your undergrad debt to a bare minimum.
UTenn would be a fine undergrad school. Nothing wrong with that…at all.
Re: your IB courses and your GPA…you need to ask your HS counselor how IB courses are weighted in terms of GPA calculations at your HS. This varies by school. Regardless, you want to get the highest grades possible. Your GPA will affect your eligibility for undergrad merit awards.
Here’s a link to the accredited programs:

Check the programs school websites and see what the requirements are for admissions then search for schools that offer good pre-audiology programs.
You might want to check out U of Cincinnati. It has the urban setting you’re looking for, and good merit scholarship opportunities. https://financialaid.uc.edu/aid/scholarships.html The undergrad Communication Sciences & Disorders program has a Dual Admission track that confers automatic acceptance to the grad program. https://cahs.uc.edu/academic-programs/undergraduate-programs/communication-sciences-and-disorders/uc-csd-dual-admissions-program.html
Another potentially-affordable OOS option would be U of Utah, in Salt Lake City, which not only has merit scholarships but also offers an option to gain in-state residency status after the first year. https://health.utah.edu/communication-sciences-disorders/degrees/undergraduate/
