Scholastic Art and Writing Awards 2018-2019

@Kingtape It varies in every region. But for my region (and probably for most from what I’ve been seeing) is the results come out in February. But (for my region at least) they don’t give an exact date.

Also, if anyone’s open to sharing flash fiction regional awards winners, I’d greatly appreciate a PM

@Kingtape i don’t know what region you’re in, but mine releases results on February 1st.

@wistfulwords Bay Area of Cali

its a month off and the angst is killing me

I just found this video online and it’s amazing:

It seems to be geared mostly toward photography, but it’s inspired me to make a video on the writers’ side.

@Kingtape OMG I LOVVEEEE THAT VIDEO!! I’ve watched it like a billion times xD

@Lunarlitgend made a “writing” version because apparently I have nothing better to do

This took soooo long to publish

edit: the bit about the girl’s love poem is a real poem you can still find on the gallery lol

@Kingtape I just watched your writing version and it’s hilarious
10/10 usage of memes

PS. Do you remember the title for the love poem thing?

@NoShotsThrown It’s the very first result for me on the 2017. “Love Reversal.” Got a gold medal.

Try comparing it to “Our Revolution” by an grader several years prior and you’ll see the format’s very similar… including the note at the bottom :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s not plagiarism to use a similar style. Heck, maybe the author came up with it by herself. But as far as I can tell, the poem only got gold for the perceived originality of its style when it’s not really that original.

now comes the time where you find mistakes you wish you could fix - I used nativity instead of naivety, but luckily it works with my poem.

@Kingtape I remember seeing that poem from Pinterest or something a while ago. Have to admit that the “Read from bottom to top now” is super similar to the “Now read from bottom to top” literally uses the same wording.

Definitely agree with the originality of style thing. I came across this other piece of writing that won gold for sci-fi/fantasy
which was just a bunch of journal entries about a murderous person that did a ton more showing than telling. Didn’t really get how it was sci-fi… But I guess it could be stylistic or whatnot… @-)

@wistfulwords Ahhhh…! I get you. Just reread this piece I wrote and I wrote “uneffective” instead of “ineffective.” Gonna hope for the best for both of us.

Hi,

So I just heard one of the greatest poems I have ever read or heard and I had to share it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LnMhy8kDiQ

This is up there with “Vincent” by Ashe Vernon or Ocean Vuong’s or Terrence Hayes’ best work IMO

I love that poem! There’s so much good content on Button Poetry.

My friend who lives in Michigan is getting his regional results this thursday lmao. Ofc in my region I still have to wait a month…

DSLKFJ:BBJK what

WHAT

knew i should’ve moved to michigan

gaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

also have to wait a month, and im already crumbling psychologically even though its still a long ways away

al;kdfja;k

Result come in Feb. 1st for me, so I’m just counting down my dreadful days…
Sometimes I feel like I can’t wait to see the results, but at other times, I feel like I’m completely not ready.

But good luck to all

@NoShotsThrown Thank you! You too! I wish you the best of luck! And results for my region also come out February 1st. In fact, Scholastic sent an Email that all results should be out before then or by then. After February 1st they’ll probably start preparing for National Judging once the Gold Key List gets out.

if we make a typo or something similar will it drastically reduce our chances of getting an award? i made a dumb mistake and put “the them” when i was changing “the people” to “them” and didn’t catch it while editing …

@Aelia Nope! Believe me you’re fine. I’ve read countless of Gold Medal works with dozens of mistakes in them (to a point where it’s disturbing actually…) or just a few here and there. I submitted a piece last year and there were a few errors in there but I still managed to get a Gold Key. Even now, in one of my short stories I realized I forgot to indent a dialogue phrase and add a quotation mark at the end of a character’s dialogue… pretty embarrassing mistakes but it won’t impact you that much. So you’re fine.
