I am a current high school sophomore, and I would like to enter the awards for the first time (for visual arts). I am in Rhode island for the local division and I'm a bit confused about how many entries I can submit... It says somewhere something about 2 entries per student, but I've been reading some forums and they talk about winning 5+ keys (indicating 5+ entries) and I'm really really confused, please help!

Ask your advisor submitting your entries for your school, unless you are submitting to a Region at Large if there is no advisor in your area. My D won 7 keys (1 gold portfolio, 2 gold, 4 silver) in 4 writing categories over 6 years (grades 7-12), so it is possible. In both visual arts and writing, you can enter multiple submissions in separate categories every year.

I dont have an advisor unfortunately, I discovered the competition on my own and I really want to enter but no one at my school has ever heard of it

Do you have an art dept. head at your school? I think the art advisor needs to download photos of each work to send to Scholastic. Some schools only submit entries for art or writing (English dept.) but if that’s the case, they can assign a teacher to be the official coordinator (it’s not hard) for the other category. Or if your school can’t designate a willing coordinator, email Scholastic to see if you can apply to the nearest Region at Large. That’s what my daughter did her first year before her school assigned a teacher to coordinate entries. When my D reached high school, we asked the English dept. head to assign a coordinator and it has now become an annual event which they encourage many students to enter. Since the deadline is usually early December, contact your school art dept. asap. If you can’t afford the registration fee per work ($5 each, $10 for portfolio?) it can be waived. Good luck!
