Scholastic Art & Writing Awards 2017-2018

I’ve literally been checking my account today hoping that they put up the results early even though we’re still 2 days away lolol

Which region is the most competitive for writing?

Why is it that critical essay is so high of a medal rate? Also, how hard is it to get a gold key in critical essay in other regions?

OM G GUYS ONE MORE DAY! And you guys have a point. I’ve seriously been stressing for this competition but hearing about the prestige of Gold keys and the honors and getting one my first year I’m starting to be less nervous I guess. :slight_smile:

Just wanted to say good luck to everyone here! I didn’t apply this year, as it totally slipped my mind with college deadlines also in December, but I competed in writing every year from 8th grade through 11th. I know it’s tempting, but try not to base your worth too much on these results – I can tell you as a Scholastic veteran that they are deeply erratic and unpredictable, and it is incredibly common for national medalists to feel like their winning work was not their best (me included!) I won a gold key in 8th grade (no nationals), didn’t even get a gold key in 9th, and two gold keys in 11th (no nationals). In sophomore year, I submitted about 6 things with just one gold key, and that turned into a national gold medalist for personal essay. The reception is wonderful – Alec Baldwin spoke at mine! – but it’s not the end of the world if you don’t get there. You’ll all be okay.

I will likely still flip out if I don’t get a national medal. If that happens, I will have nothing to put on my college applications. Nothing. I literally do nothing outside of school and I have like 2 extracurriculars and the only thing I have going for me is a somewhat decent SAT score.

You’ll still have at least one gold key! I’m sure colleges know the difference between a medal and a key, but either way, winning anything shows that you are dedicated to your craft and have something to show for it. Don’t flip out! @nobodycansaveme

Has anyone else been obsessively looking over their submissions? XD

One day left! Good luck to all!

I feel the same way you all do – I wish they would hurry up and get it over with! And don’t give up hope! We were SHOCKED when my son won a national silver medal in 2016 for journalism. It was for a piece he wrote for his 8th grade final about my experiences traveling from the Midwest to the Soviet Union in the 1980s and his coach’s experiences living in the Soviet Union and traveling to North Korea as a teenager for skating. I thought it was a good paper, but not much beyond that, and we only decided to submit it as an afterthought. So you really never know!

@nobodycansaveme Sending you lots and lots of best wishes for a medal tomorrow!

Hey guys, you said the results are posted at 12:00pm Eastern Time but @FlameAlchemist and I live in the Midwest so wouldn’t that be 11:00pm for us?

Honestly I don’t even want the results to come out because as long as they don’t, I still have hope that I might have won something

@Lunarlitgend I would imagine it would be available for you guys at 11am – I don’t remember anyone saying the results would be staggered out time-wise…

@nobodycansaveme Dude I feel the exact same way xD

@Samsmom2019 Okay thank you :slight_smile:

Just received news that I’m one of the six Civic award medals! I’m so shocked omg. they sent me an email in the middle of my fourth period

@Samsmom2019 and I see your point. I mean I remember for regionals the results came out at around mid 9:00am not even 10:00 yet, so yup. Honestly I’m just gonna turn off my phone and check at around 11:00 or 12:00 xD

@shakuton OMG CONGRATS! :smiley:

@shakuton CONGRATULATIONS! :slight_smile:
