Scholastic Art & Writing Awards 2017-2018

@nobodycansaveme I wish you the greatest of luck! I hope you win and get the opportunity to go to NYC to be recognized

My daughter has a photograph in the contest. She is a senior. When she first won the regional gold key she contacted every college she applied to, sent them the photo and a scan of her certificate and asked that it be added to her application. Every school congratulated her. In at least two cases it helped convince them to give her more scholarship money.

Eek! Less than two days left. Good luck to all!

That is very encouraging to hear, @JerseyMom2022 . Is her prospective major in the art field or are the schools art colleges? I’m wondering if the impact of the award would be the same if not.

Oh yeah colleges definitely do like to see Scholastics. I have 22 regional awards for writing (6 gold, 7 silver, 13 honorable) from four years of submissions, and all the schools I applied to were so impressed despite my major not extensively involving writing (major is fashion business).

So far I’ve got 2 gold, 1 silver, and 3 honorable (From 2 years of submitting) How much weight will that carry on college applications if I’m planning to go into English/creative writing? (I’m also a junior so I don’t have a lot of time left)

Two days and counting!
Has anyone received any updates from Scholastic? I honestly really hope not, as I haven’t either, and I’ve heard that they notify scholastic national winners by email. Holding my breath for results! It’s coming up so soon!!!

@nobodycansaveme It’ll definitely have some weight for your application, as it shows you’ve dedicated your time to your craft and was acknowledged for it. For English/Creative Writing it’ll definitely be a nice addition to have.

My daughter was accepted as an art major to Temple, UConn and UDelaware. Once there she can switch her major to undeclared no problem. She was also accepted at three schools at Rutgers including the art school. If she switches out of the art school to one of the other schools at Rutgers she will lose her scholarship. Her Temple and UDel scholarships are not major dependent. She got no financial aid for UConn at all. Most universities value talented well rounded creative individuals. Scholastic is impressive regardless of major

I haven’t received an email or anything either. I think they’ll probably send out a notification reminder tomorrow

@FlameAlchemist they don’t email you if you got a medal until around 12 (eastern time) on Tuesday. The national results are usually posted at 12 the day of, but last year when I logged into my portal at like 11-ish it was already updated with “Sorry, you have not received a medal.” So the Scholastics portal does update if you medal!

Jesus God, if I see “Sorry, you have not received a medal” on my account, I’ll probably have a meltdown

What is the percentage (chance) of getting a medal? Does it vary by category?

@geometry1761 yeah, it varies by category. Idk about art, but poetry/short story/personal essay/writing portfolio are the hardest to medal in for writing. Those are a 15% chance I believe. Novel writing/critical essay/flash fiction are the highest (like 30%).

Around 10 percent of gold keys get a medal I’ve heard!

Does anyone know how hard it was to get a gold key for writing portfolio this year? Or how many people got one?

@Zoe528 there were 160-ish gold key writing portfolios (I just control f-ed on the total gold key list to find this out). I think it differs from region to region–I know in my region (Northeast) they cut the number of awards they gave out this year so there were only 10 portfolio gold keys from my region.

the chances are honestly so slim that i’m telling myself to be happy for the regional keys i already got this year  tbh it’s a huge huge honor just to be among the works even considered for nationals. lol and i’m a senior, so this is more for validation that college apps or anything. i’m actually so, super grateful to my region because it is teeny tiny, so even giving gold keys is rlly tough for them

I totally agree! my only goal this year was to get at least one gold key just so I would know that my work had been considered nationally

yeah my region only gives out like 5-8 total gold keys in writing per year so i feel very lucky + honored
