Scholastic Art & Writing Awards 2017-2018

@scenicstars We do everything from writing and producing our own podcasts, chapbooks, the school newspaper, a literary magazine, etc. I’m a senior, so I’m doing the senior project: write and publish your first book. It’s quite daunting and stressful, but I’m loving it so far! I’m in the Northeast Region. It’s kind of unfair though because schools like Exeter/my school/Interlochen dominate Youngarts/Scholastics in their regions.
@FlameAlchemist You should look into summer writing camps! There’s Writopia/Iowa/Pratt/etc, and usually if you win a key in Scholastics, they’ll give you a chance to enter for a scholarship to these camps. They’re all sleep away for 1-2 weeks, but I know people who went and they loved it because of the writing community and connections you make.

Wow, your school sounds so awesome!! And ooh, publishing a book, what’s it about? Are you guys going to self-publish, or get an agent and try to get a deal with one of the Big 5 publishing houses? I can imagine the stress you have haha, but overall yeah, it does sound pretty great lol! And ohh, because your region has so many writing/arts centered school, it’s difficult for others to grasp a decent chance in the comp, I see. And just out of curiosity, lol, do you know how they select the people that get a scholarship to attend those writing camps? Thanks, lol!

@scenicstars My book’s a collection poetry about learning to love yourself and others despite race, ethnicity, life story, etc. If we have time in the year we try to pitch to publishers and agents, but usually we self-publish through Amazon CreateSpace.
I have no idea about how many get the scholarships. They do exist though and are worth trying to get!

I’m so sick of my own submissions just from looking them over so many times hahaha

@shakuton @scenicstars Turns out everything was fine for my forms! (: (: (: They just emailed me about it, so I’m bouncing off the walls. Thanks for telling me about the writing camps. I think I might try for Iowa, though I doubt I’ll get in, being a freshman. At any rate, it sounds like a good idea, and definitely an awesome way to spend my summer! Also, on a practical note, it costs a lot less than the Interlochen Camp, and sounds a little bit better for writing. Thanks a ton!

@FlameAlchemist ooh, im so glad everything turned out alright! and man, wouldn’t getting a scholarship to one of those writing camps be great? and any luck with convincing your parents to let you attend an arts boarding school?

@scenicstars Thank you  My regional deadline is December 14. It’s coming up. Good luck to you too!

@1QQ1QQ ofc! and oh, what region are you from, lol? my region’s deadline for writing submission was last night amd im like oh man, this is it! and thanks so much!

I, too, had the deadline last night. It’s time to torture myself and reread through every single piece until January ahhh

@shakuton hahah im honestly going to (try) not to read my submissions anymore because i feel like i might find like this one spelling error, or something like that, and ill be beating myself about it for the rest of this month and next month, lmao! good luck to you!

Me too haha I’m definitely not looking at my pieces again!! Good luck everyone

good luck everyone!

@scenicstars AZ deadline is 12/14.

Good luck everyone

good luck guys! :):)

@1QQ1QQ no way?? you’re in my area! i’m the copres for az! good luck!!! (join the peer review circles we’re dying)

Can you submit pieces that you completed with a different teacher at a different school? My D was thinking about submitting pieces that were part of her AP portfolio from a previous school. She has since transferred to a different school, but is not sure she can use those.

If wherever she originally submitted them to is fine with it then yes! Scholastic is totally okay with previously submitted/recognized work.

I’m kind of freaking out. I mailed my forms a few days ago but I didn’t realize until today that if we paid online, we have to mail copies of the order confirmations along with our forms. The deadline is tonight so I don’t have time to resubmit the forms. Instead, I’m mailing the order receipts in a separate envelope. Do you think this will disqualify me though since the submission forms will not arrive with the receipts attached and the receipts will likely arrive a couple of days later?

@ssbdreamer e-mail your local affiliate about it. i’m sure they’ll understand. they wouldn’t disqualify you for something as miniscule as that.
