Scholastic Art & Writing Awards 2017-2018

@JerseyMom2022 And congrats to your daughter!

@lenasharb my daughter participated last year and was notified the first Friday in February. She got an email about the piece that won honorable mention but she also got an email listing all the pieces that did not win, informing her that they didn’t win. According to her art teacher it’s been the first Friday in February for at least the last few years. Not sure what time. Her notification about winning a gold key was in the middle of the night, Sunday January 29th. Like around 11 PM.

@dreamthief001 It might be a at-large region since they don’t do visions & voices.

@BookLvr My pieces were all short stories, which I heard was a pretty competitive category, so I was convinced that I wouldn’t win. Thanks for the congratulations! Are you entering this year? If so, good luck!
As for all these winners, congratulations! I’ve got to say, this thread is amazing! In past years, the thread in total, counting nationals, was about this long. This year, this is one of the most popular threads! Go Scholastic!

got las llaves de plata!! (excuse my poor attempt @ spanish lol) but anyways congrats everyone!! :) anyone going to apply for the SAS scholarship??

@scenicstars What is that?

@ssbdreamer by receiving silver/gold keys, you become eligible to fill out this application thing for scholastic i think that essentially pays for your tuition @ a writing/art program (although i think if you get in, they choose which one they think fits you apparently, but im not 100% sure on that one).

I think I’m going to! I wanted to apply to some of those programs anyways so this is great

I’m going to be applying for the summer scholarship (as I had 4 gold keys & 2 silver keys that qualified), but I doubt I’ll be doing it as I’m a NSLIY summer semifinalist as well.

@scenicstars I’m totally applying for one! It sounds like an awesome opportunity, and anyway, I almost certainly won’t get to go to a writing camp without one of them. Do you know what camps they’re giving out scholarships to?

If you go to the Student Questionnaire part it has a list of all of them

@dreamthief001 Dang. I feel like a dope. Thanks for telling me!

Congrats to everyone here. Submittting work requires guts and a willingness to put yourself out there. It’s an effort that should be commended!

Like Flamealchemist, my daughter was lucky enough to have gotten recognition for several pieces, but the one we thought was the best received nothing. For more experienced entrants, is this common? For those rare few who get a medal for the next round, was it for what you thought was your best work? I also wondered if this is a common feeling in writing competitions generally.

@toandfro my daughter’s portfolios were all drawings and paintings. The things that got her accepted into top art schools, the things that admissions officers were exclaiming over at National Portfolio day. The thing that won her a gold key? A photograph. Granted a compelling photograph, but one that barely got any attention at Portfolio Day. In fact, she didn’t even include it in her final college portfolio. And last year she got honorable mention for a small painting while stronger pieces were ignored. In fact, last year’s experience convinced me that it’s best to submit a lot of stuff.

We had the same experience. The pieces I thought were excellent received nothing and one we threw in at the last moment got a gold key. A photograph, when she is really more of a painter. Shrug.

@toandfro I know someone who won finalist in Youngarts with two short stories. Youngarts is harder to win than Scholastics. They submitted those two short stories this year to Scholastics. They didn’t even win HMs when results came out. Writing/Art is extremely subjective, especially for competitions.

I personally have found that Scholastics looks for pretty specific things when they pick out winners. I submitted many pieces this year and of the ones that won, they were the ones about race issues/sensitive topics. It’s been the same way all four years I’ve submitted.

And very realistic, detailed stuff in the drawing category. Like stuff that looks like it took HOURS to create tends to win, in my opinion, over more expressionistic pieces. At least, that’s my impression when I look at the national winners on the website. Not that I am complaining. The stuff that wins is always stunning. But if that isn’t your style you might be out of luck for this contest and yet still have a very competitive art school portfolio. Just my personal observation.

Yes, I definitely experienced that! The four poems I thought were my best work all received silver, while the poem that received a gold key was one that I contemplated not submitting at all because I didn’t think it was very good. (definitely glad that I submitted it now lol!)

@pacificnwgal I submitted to California Central Coast Art and haven’t had any notification. Their affiliate page says that we’d be notified by Feb 2. Have you gotten anything back?

@puppy61200 Heyo! I’m actually co-pres of yaa, the local affiliate of Scholastic in az, and i just wanted to let you know that results for regional awards will be up on yaarizona.org in mid February. However, if you want to know whether or not you got a gold key/silver rn, you can log into your art and writing acct
