Hi, CCers,
I am looking for a recommendation for a young friend who is planning on being a comp sci major and who also wants to stay in touch with his humanities side. He would be a transfer student and is looking for a top school that's got a great comp sci department, not too small but maybe not too big, probably on the East Coast or Midwest (otherwise I'd suggest Stanford and Harvey Mudd). Any really great schools for Comp Sci for him?

Cornell is the best option for that combination.

Any of the Ivies would do, really, as well as Hopkins, Duke, Northwestern, Chicago, and probably a lot more. Does he have more specific preferences?

Thanks, Warblers. What is it about Cornell that you recommend? I think he would be an art history minor if he has a choice. He also loves music, likes cities, loves the Northeast.

Rice would also be a great fit for this (except that it’s outside of the East Coast).

Carnegie Mellon.

CMU is great for computer science, but I purposely excluded it. Aside from English and philosophy, it offers very little in the humanities. More to the point, the art program is almost entirely studio-based.

Purely from an academic standpoint, it’s top 5 for computer science and top 5 for the humanities. What’s not to like? Academics aside, Ithaca is a great town, and I think Cornell is a nice size. I’m also a fan of the diversity of programs available and the sprawling campus.

That said…a place like Brown or Hopkins might be a better choice if he’s a big fan of cities. Ithaca is great, but it’s much more of a college town than a city.

Actually, he had mentioned Cornell as a good place–so I think you’re right on target, Warblersrule86. I’m impressed at your knowledge of the ins and outs of CMU, too!

Does anyone have any thoughts on U Toronto and McGill?

I’m also interested in U of T and McGill for a combination of CS and an Arts subject. Anyone know?

From what I saw on the U of T website, I wasn’t sure about the arts aspect, but I did see that they have a 12 to 16 month internship program that looked great–it looks as if you get paid some real money! That would be an excellent head start on a career.

I think Yale and Brown have some possibilities, too, for letting students dabble both in arts and computers.
