School List for Next Year and Summer Interviews

Loomis’s acceptance rate is between 20% to 25%. It is a great school with fine academics.

^^ that’s strange, loomis’s acceptance rate has been solidly in the low 30s for the past few years. did acceptance rates drop this year or what?

@ ifax, UWCs are 2 year boarding schools around the globe, and they pick students from all over the world as well. you’re picked through your national committee, and a lot of them (as well as specific schools) award scholarships/full scholarships. in fact, lester b. pearson college is entirely full scholarship if i’m not mistaken… anyway, it’s worth looking into :slight_smile: they use the IB program, they have immensely diverse student bodies and their campuses are gorgeous and all over the world (i believe there’s a new one in bosnia and herzegovina)… wooo sales pitch over.

^^@DiveAlive: record number of applicants this year. Over 1700.

^ Loomis had just over 1600 applications for about 400 spots, so that is about a 25% acceptance rate.

^^That number can’t be right (400 spots). Whole school is <800. Maybe you are guessing (or know?) they made 400 offers, but they couldn’t be seeking to fill many more than 200 actual spots.

@PelicanDad, schools always accept MORE kids than actual number of available slots, because not all the kids will accept the admissions offer, as the kids generally apply to multiple schools.

Here’s my current list for next year. This is going to be VERY subject to change. Of course, I’ll call schools and ask them about how many openings they predict they’ll have for 10th grade. That will really influence this. So, here it is:

-Deerfield
-Hotchkiss
-St. Mark’s
-Kent
-Loomis
-Middlesex
-Taft
-Tabor
-Groton
-St. Paul’s

However, if there aren’t that many openings for 10th grade, I will take Groton and SPS off my list. I decided not to apply to Andover next year because I don’t think I’ll get in. I figure its not worth applying since I know I won’t get in.

@brandonnnbsc,
I have looked at Choate. For a while, Choate was my first choice. However, I decided not to apply. I heard some pretty bad things about Choate…

@markalex1,
Congrats on Exeter! I hope you have a good next year!

@deerbri,
I applied to Deerfield this year and was WLed. Trust me, Deerfield is on my list for next year. They were one of my first choices last year, and I really felt a special connection to Deerfield. Have a good time at DA and you can send me a PM about DA anytime.

@swissbrit,
I looked at Loomis and I really liked it. It’s definitely on my list for next year.

@DiveAlive,
I’ll check out the UWCs. I’ll see if there any close enough for my parents to let me apply. Thanks for the suggestion.

Any thoughts on my list?

@ifax, please be sure to share w/ us what info you learn when you call these schools to ask about spots for 10th grade!

I don’t know…I think that a lot of the “higher” schools have minimal spots for 10th grade. I would suggest removing one from the list, and adding a school that has way more space for incoming sophomores. I’m not even saying Peddie, but just look around. I know you’re thinking of taking off SPS and Groton, but just delve further!

Another thing I have heard about Loomis is that they are trying to cut down on the number of day students (60% boarding, 40% day). So one would assume that they would just let in slightly less day students and slightly more boarders. However, Loomis doesn’t currently have the funds to build more dorms, so they just end up cutting more day students and not changing the number of boarders, thus leading to less kids overall being accepted.

Just my theory/what I have heard from some.

Loomis have the funds. But yes, they are trying to cut down on day students. They’re doing this very slowly.

Ooh! Like what ifax?

Yes ifax. I would also like to know what you’ve heard about Choate.

Maybe it just wasn’t the right fit.

ifax, you can always PM any of the current Choate students to ask questions. I can assure you Choate is a great school; maybe the person you heard from had a bad experience.

On a sidenote, swissbrit is at his 999th post!

OP: I would cut Kent off your list, it’s a safety school compared to the others on your list.

^ i’d have to disagree. it’s also a terrible idea applying to only “HADES” schools. & few schools are “safety” schools if you need FA…

kent has a generous FA budget & it has an enormous FA budget in comparison to its endowment, even more when compared those of peer schools. as ifax is an FA applicant, this would benefit him/her.
also, people in the past have chosen kent over A/E because they’ve gotten better FA there. i interviewed with them this past admissions season (nicest lady out of all the ones i interviewed with!!) and it seems rather clear to me that the rigor is there if you need it to be.

anyone, if you’re doubting kent’s academic offerings PM italianboarder-- he chose kent over exeter and he’s headed off for a top liberal arts college this year. also, you might want to PM neatoburrito, as she’s rather familiar with kent.

kent’s a great school, IMHO :-)

[Luke Matarazzo: To Go or Not to Go?](http://thenews.choate.edu/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=439%3Aluke-matarazzo&Itemid=21)

That’s the only article I can find that turned me off from Choate. I remember some more I found in the Student newspaper. I also heard from a Choate alumni that Choate was really nasty. So, put that together, I have a bad impression of Choate. But hey, this is just my impression of Choate, that doesn’t mean Choate is like this at all.

And on a side note, here’s my current list:

-Deerfield
-St. Mark’s
-Kent
-Hotchkiss
-Taft
-Loomis
-Middlesex
-St. George’s
-Groton (depends on openings for 10th grade)
-St. Paul’s (depends on openings for 10th grade)

If Groton and SPS don’t have openings for 10th grade, I’ll probably add Tabor and Governor’s.

You might want to consider the difficulty of the applications. I believe SPS, Groton and Choate were among the more labor intensive applications to complete. Make sure you’re able to put in your best effort to each application.

@ifax-That Choate article was pretty nasty to me. But I remember touring in the fall, and my tour guide was extremely nice and outgoing. It depends on the person. Anyways, I think that’s a good list. I looked at CC’s master list, and there was a person accepted into Groton for 10th grade, so it can happen!
