if a school makes a correction on the fafsa do all schools on the fafsa receive that correction? Basically I did 2 rounds (10 schools the first, 10 the second). The school that made a correction was in the second round but does that mean other schools in the second round see it too? does the first see it as well? I need to see if i need to resend/update or anything so this would really help me! Thanks in advance!!
Give @kelsmom a chance to have Easter with her family…and I bet she will answer your question.
Schools can make changes that only show up for their school, but many do it in a way that changes it for all schools (that happens automatically when the changes are sent through the school’s computer system to the federal processor). If the school sent it in the way that goes to all schools, it would only go to the second set of schools.
@kelsmom ok I see thank you! Before the correction I was just barely at the cutoff to be eligible for Pell grant. With the new change I am not eligible anymore. This would still reflect in the financial aid packages I’ve already received from the first batch of schools right because it is through the government?
What was the change? If it was an accurate change, and really you are not eligible for that Pell Grant amount, it might be in your better interest to make the change for all your schools.
If it’s an accurate change, and you now know that…you would be accepting a Pell at those other schools using knowingly inaccurate information. Receiving federally funded aid when you know the info is inaccurate is considered fraud.
ETA…if you do accept the larger Pell at one of those other schools…it is very possible that they will find the FAFSA error at a later date…and you could be responsible for paying back what you weren’t really entitled to receive.
@kelsmom do I have this right.
Yes, @thumper1 is correct. I suggest you find out what the change was. If you post it here, we can comment. I worked in financial aid until recently, and I verified many students/made many required changes.
Please read the above two responses. They are important.
What was the change that was made?
@kelsmom @thumper1 We own a small business which we included on the css. However the college put the value of our business in the investments category. I was under the belief that small businesses under 100 employees were not included on the fafsa…
How did they know the value of your business?
@kelsmom from the 1120
The school did something that, in my opinion, based on my interpretation of federal regulations, may be incorrect. If you aren’t interested in attending that school, let it go … but contact the FAFSA helpline to see if the change went to any schools other than the one that made it. If it did, contact the other schools to let them know of the change. Tell them what they did, and ask those schools to remove that change if they disagree with it. If you are interested in the school that made the change, contact them & ask to discuss the change with a manager.
It is possible that your parents might have needed to report some amount for investments … without seeing the tax returns, I can’t make that determination. But what I think is odd is the school using information on form 1120 to come up with an investment amount. Again, I don’t have all the information, so I cannot say for sure if the change is incorrect … but I think you should find out for sure.
Of course, if the change doesn’t actually result in an EFC change that would affect the amount of aid you receive, there is no point in worrying about it.
@kelsmom Thank you so much for all your help. It increased my EFC dramatically so I no longer have PELL grant. I would really like to tell you more specifically how (I think) they interpreted the number from the 1120 however I cannot private message you here since I am new, any way you can message me/I can contact you privately? Thank you so much again.
I just messaged you.
thank you so much! Just replied.
