Does anyone know what the school of architecture is like at SC in terms of its programs and academics? I am highly considering USC but I would like to hear what it is really like out here.

its an awesome school for architecture.
my friend did a architecture program there over the summer and he absolutely LOVED it.
so yeah, i can't say much besides that...

Wright and Gehry. Doesn't get any better than that.

Hi, i'm the friend that sarahjhansen is talking about that went to USC over the summer and i did love it. USC is one of the best schools for Architecture in the nation, it is a 5 year school, so you can finish your degree and recieve your license earlier than having a 4 + 2 year degree. The school of architecture has about 500 students in all with a freshmen class of 100 out of the 700 that apply yearly. My advice is to make your portfolio as perfect as you possibly can and do the USC Exploration of Architecture Summer Program if you have the time.

hi ben!!!!!!!!!!!

bennjesse,

thank you so much for your advice about USC. Unfortunately, I will not have time to do the summer program out there as I am a senior and have already been admitted to the school (I did however do a similar program at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh and had a BLAST).

What I would like to know more is about the faculty and perhaps what the overall environment is like out there. I know it gets a bad rep about begin in South Central (i've heard Compton, Watts, "The Ghetto"), but aside from that, what is the school really all about? Also, did the professors tell you about what your ability would be to take elective classes in the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences? And lastly, what is off-campus life like (where are the good places to hang out, eat, shop, club, etc...).

many thanks in advance.

I'm happy to help. I don't go to USC yet but i hope to in the fall, but i still know alot about this specific school. The area USC is in is not really that bad as people make it sound and watts is not even that close to the school, but it's still important to have saftey in mind. As far as i know it think this is about one extra elective class you can take per a semester and if you have APs to cover your necessary classes than i'm sure you'll also have extra time for electives. However, the school of architecture really wants commited students to the program, that's why they require a portfolio for admission, that's why there are plenty of jokes about how architectual students have no life outside of the studio. There are plenty of things to do on and off campus considering the mere fact that you are in downtown LA. The University village, honestly is not that good at all and looks 30 years outdated, and everyone admitts to the fact that there is nothing really to do there, so for real fun you have to go on the bus or drive somewhere, but you're near enough to the beach, hollywood, beverly, and downtown fun. That's about all i can offer in help since i'm a senior too, like you. You have already been admitted to the university, and the school of architecture ? If so congrats!
