Im a Critical Studies prospective major and I just wanted to see who else is out there and who else is waiting avidly for April 1st. What program did you apply to? Have you heard back yet?

Also, on friday I received an email about the new Media Arts B.A. Did anyone else get this email? Or is it just for select applicants?

I fortunately had the chance to received admissions early. I have not seen an email yet, however.

I’m a Critical Studies prospect as well! I did get the email this Friday and I replied to have it as a Third Option just because I thought that a third option of some sort is better than none at all. I have wanted to go to USC for the past 10 years and I am nervously awaiting my decision! Did any of you get a letter requesting mid-term grades? I took this as a good sign!

I think all applicants requested mid-term grades.

How are you guys approaching the Critical Studies major? Do you guys want to make films? Or become a professor? Or become movie critics?

GiveMeReason,

That is the best question I have heard in so long! I talked to an admissions councilor at USC and was enlightened that Critical Studies can lead to a marvelous business in film career.

give me reason,
you were accepted early? what were your stats?

Yes, I was accepted early as a Trustee Scholar Finalist. I will post stats later, but my essays, safe to say, were a LARGE part in why I got accepted early.

I’m a prospective Interactive Media student! Anxiously awaiting a decision. I didn’t get an email about the Media Arts B.A. though, so maybe it depends on your selected major(s)?

4000 word Critical Essay writing sample the extent to which Christopher Nolan was an auteur.

GiveMeReason- I am a HUGE fan of Christopher Nolan. I’d love to read your essay.

I am hoping to do undergrad critical studies to just get very knowledgable in that aspect of film first and then hopefully I’ll be able to do some grad work for production. I think a vital part of succeeding in film is found from understanding and analyzing film as a whole. Either way, just being at USC would be an absolute dream and their film department is incredible! Did you guys hear about James Franco possibly teaching a class next year?

I love the guy as an actor. Yeah, sometimes he can come off as a bit of a d-bag (case in point the NYU acting course he got a D in), but in a way he is an academic at heart. I would take a class or two just to see things from a (successful) actor.

I like the approach, but honestly I do find MFA Production to be counter intuitive. All the technical stuff isn’t that hard to learn. Yes, it works for some, but for me at least I don’t think it is that important. I would rather intern during my BA years, make some short films independently from class, and have a decent mix of internships (work experience?), vision, and understanding of film when I graduate.

I am not depending on my BA to get me anywhere. I see a USC Cinematic Arts degree as kind of like a box of tools (creative nurturing, film studies courses, film equipment) and spare parts (internships, jobs, opportunities), and not an actual ride (car) to a good career. You don’t necessary have to go to USC to get the box of tools and spare parts, but I know it will be there for me and that the tools and part will be good. Hopefully, I will be able to make my own car and drive myself to success.

Very weird analogy. But if you get to know me more (hopefully), you will know that I like to make analogies between completely different things.

I think this is the best way to conceptualize film school, and, yes, it makes perfect sense.
