School of Engineering vs. Normal School? Confused want to get something straight

I’m a little confused by the engineering programs schools offer. For example, CMU’s average gpa is 3.76, but for CIT it is 3.88 (not exactly sure but somewhere around there). what’s the difference between the 3.76 and the 3.88? I know I would apply specifically for CIT, but what does the 3.76 average mean?

0.12

Seriously though, you need to provide more context. That could be the average admitted student’s HS GPA. If so, it seems low for Carnegie Mellon. Weighted? Unweighted? It could also be the average graduating GPA from the institution. In that case, it seems high. Either you need to clarify, or better yet, carefully read your sources and glean your info there.

Are you talking about GPA for acceptance from high school? If the CMU you are referring to is Carnegie Mellon, then that GPA does not seem very realistic for acceptance…

The 2016-17 Common Data Set also says 3.76 uw average.

I am seeing 3.88 as the average GPA for a student admitted into the engineering at CMU.

So there you go, OP. As you stated, it’s more difficult to get into the engineering school specifically than it is to get into CMU on average – the students applying for engineering have higher stats.

CMU admits by program, not to the university as a whole. You must spend at least your freshman year in the program you are admitted to before trying to transfer to a different program. Even then internal transfer is highly competitive.

I see what I was looking for was that CMU admits by program, and the 3.76 is just the entire average of students admitted into all programs.

@umcoe16 @eyemgh I checked again 3.76 is the average. I mean high school gpa UW for applying students.

Thanks everyone

I don’t see how 3.76 checks out. If you look at the average of each school, then only one school has an average GPA below 3.8, and that is the College of Fine Arts. For that school, they place a good amount of weight on an applicant’s portfolio and/or audition, and a little (but not significantly) less weight on their grades and test scores.
