D has asked the principal of our 3000 student school to write a recommendation for her and he has enthusiastically agreed. D is Student Council president and has been class president in 10th and 11th grades. Shes also served four years on Principals Council and was recently appointed by the principal to our schools faculty steering committee. Student government students are all in one advisory class (homeroom) and our principal advises the juniors and seniors so she feels he knows her quite well. On the other hand, her counselor is responsible for 600 students and will be writing letters for probably 100 seniors. He was Ss counselor and wrote a generic letter of recommendation. Is it appropriate and advisable to invite the principal to fill out the counselor recommendation? What are potential drawbacks?

If the principal will agree to do this, it should help becuase the rec will be more personal. My thought is that the principal might not agree, though. The principal might be inclined to avoid taking this responsibility away from the GC. In that event, just submit the principal’s letter of rec as an additional rec to the schools.
