So my school usually sends about 10 (?) people to Cal each year, and suddenly this year something like 40+ out of a class of ~600 were admitted, which just seems like an inordinate amount to me. I’m wondering why this is (it’s a good CA school that makes the top 50 in state), and what it means for future admissions from my school. Nothing significant happened here to draw attention to the school academically or otherwise. Was it a one time thing and they’ll compensate by accepting barely any next year, or will this be a trend from now on? I know it’s hard to extrapolate from just a year and this might not be the place to be asking, but I’m curious if any other schools have experience with this kind of thing.
I’d guess it’s a fluke and will have no influence over next year.
You may want to confirm this. When you said your school usually sends about 10 people to Cal, perhaps that means only about that many decide to go. 40+ people were admitted this year, but that doesn’t mean all 40+ people matriculated. That number should be less.
Nope, they’re definitely all going! I have no number for pure admissions, but I know for sure that at least 40 are going (it’s all in the final college information part of the yearbook/ I had a ton of friends in this group). Even a lot of the faculty are confused why there was this sudden jump.
The 2016 stats from my son’s high school, a CA public school, just came out, the UCs across the board indeed accepted a lot more kids this year comparing to last year. I was surprise to see that the UCLA admits were more than double.
