School Spirit at Vanderbilt

I am wondering the school spirit of Vanderbilt and especially for sports. Do people go to the sports games? Is there a lot of school spirit at Vanderbilt?

In terms of sports, there wasn’t all that much spirit before the James Franklin era, as there just wasn’t much to be excited about. People attend football games but it wasn’t a big part of the culture. Tailgating was the main attraction on game day; you would go to the game if you felt like it, and maybe leave at halftime. In fact, Vanderbilt had to establish a rule to end tailgates 30 mins before kickoffs because Greek row would just tailgate through the entire game and not attend (this is 2-3 years ago).

Now in the Franklin era, there is a TON of school spirit for the football program. It’s really incredible how it has changed. Everyone goes to the games. Everyone is in love with Franklin and the Dores. Everyone is wearing black and gold rather than just randomly colored button downs/ties/sundresses.

Unfortunately the basketball program doesn’t get as much support from the student body but it still has a strong following.

So Pancaked, how’s the campus tonight after the win over Florida today? Go Dores! Anchor Down.

The more you win the more people show up for games and wins over GA and FL are big. The excitement, school spirit, energy, and camaraderie that winning teams in elite conferences bring to their campus just can’t be reproduced at most top 20 universities. Basketball was big a few years back now football (and baseball) are playing well.

**Unfortunately the basketball program doesn’t get as much support from the student body but it still has a strong following. **

I would say this is currently correct, however, in the past basketball has had huge support. I remember getting to games 2-3 hours early just to get a decent seat. Granted this was during the Shan Foster era and the few years after but I believe we will get to that point again in the near future.

This cannot be judged in just the 4 short years a student is there. In the last few years, Vanderbilt beat kentucky for the SEC title in basketball. Kentucky went on to the national championship. I’d say 2 to 3 years ago. The baseball team went to Omaha as one of 8 teams to participate and were the 3rd or 4th team eliminated. It was amazing. this was 2011, I believe. Even before Franklin, football has some shining moments. Now, it’s more exciting because they’re making bowl games. Vanderbilt has a lot to be proud of in terms of athletics, especially because they compete in the SEC.

School spirit at Vanderbilt was pretty decent even before Franklin. Certainly not at its current level, but there were both basketball and football games where the crowd was pretty lively. Recent alumni also seem to have alot of school spirit.

My daughter tells me that she finds that school spirit at vanderbilt has a large presence on campus

The men’s basketball team is looking very promising. They are getting better and better during every game. Could be a “building year”, or they could bust out come February. Recruiting has been successful, obviously.

I think next year is our year for basketball - we signed a top 25 recruiting class and we will be competitive next year for a NCAAT spot.

Football and baseball are also doing well - its a good time to be a Commodore.

Even if an SEC team doesn’t appear in the football national championship, the SEC is really the toughest football conference. Unfortunately for the teams in the SEC, they spend the season beating up on each other…it will be good to have a mini-playoff next year. Florida State and Ohio State are currently undefeated, so they will probably end up in the championship game. I would like to see Alabama, LSU, Auburn, or maybe even USC up against Ohio State…Vanderbilt does really, really well in this conference and has a lot to be proud of.
