Sports at Vandy

I'm curious about the sports atmostphere.

I know the success, the 'SEC level' enthusiasm and prowess.

However I have a few questions:

How many students show up for a football game? Basketball?

Is their participation or enthusiasm for Intramural/Club sports?

I heard a rumor that people dress up for games? Can someone explain this to me :)

Who are Vandy's primary rivals? Do more students show up for these games? Heightened enthusiasm? Do you get that rivalry feel the week/day of the game?

BONUS: Most underrated/fun Vandy sporting event to attend?

Generally, quite a few students show up for football games, especially in recent years. Sometimes it takes a quarter or so to fill up the student section though. The lower part of it is always filling up about an hour prior to games with the more energetic students.

Basketball games are almost always packed (unless its at the beginning of the season with a small school). You may have to get there 2 hours or more in advance for the big games or you won’t even get into the gym.

Intramural sports are fairly big on campus. There are several leagues for each sport (A,B,C, co-ed) and tons of sports (flag football, basketball, softball, soccer, volleyball, etc.). Usually a lot of participants and even some spectators, maybe more so for the A and fraternity leagues.

For dressing up, I think you mean people wear nice “dress” clothes. This really only applies to football games and is slowly evolving I think. I’d say half the people wear traditional football watching attire (with some painting up or going all out) and the other half wear sun dresses, khaki pants, ties, shirts, loafers, and the like.

Vandy’s primary rival is obviously UT. I guess any SEC school could be considered a rival. MTSU and other local schools as well. Nothing as big as Alabama/Auburn, Ohio State/Michigan, or Texas/Oklahoma though.

I personally think baseball games are underrated. They are tons of fun and the atmosphere is pretty laid back. A great way to spend a nice spring afternoon.

agree with all of this…
