School spirit - is there any?

Can anyone comment on the school spirit at BU?
Do a lot of kids walk around wearing BU apparel?

Not a ton of school spirit. Athletics arranges around hockey and there's a core group for that. Frats / sororities have their thing but they're a small %.

More kids now wear BU stuff, so you won't look odd wearing it but you won't feel required to don it either. Number seems to increase each year and I suspect more will because BU is looking into increasing brand awareness and thus will likely come out with spiffier duds. Many BU kids are fairly fashion conscious and there is the Jasmine Sola outlet on campus. (That last is only half a joke; you can dress as you want but it's not a place where everyone dresses preppy or like a hippie or in sweats. You see a variety of style.)

The school is somewhat ambivalent about its identity: is it Boston University or BU? Everyone calls it BU but the old administration was hung up on using the whole name. I expect President Brown, who comes from that school only known by the initials MIT, will change that. They've hired a firm to work on their branding.

I wish they'd change the colors but that isn't likely. Every school around here uses red: Harvard, MIT, BU . . . Northeastern is red and black while BC is a reddish maroon and gold. An opportunity for blue? green? purple?

Like the post before mine said, tons of school spirit comes from hockey. Its Boston, so we all love hockey. On game nights, you will see students migrating in huge packs to the arena to cheer on the team. During the rest of the week, you will certainly see lots of kids wearing BU sweatshirts and hats. I think there is quite a good amount of school spirit in general. But the most will definitely be during hockey games.

"Its Boston, so we all love hockey."

Wait... what?
Last time I checked the Red Sox were all that mattered to us lol.

But seriously, I've gotten the impression that hockey is a source of school spirit at BU as well as other Boston schools, but it's still not really a "Boston Thing".

Well yes, people in Boston as a whole center their lives around the Sox but I'm talking about the colleges in Boston. So rephrased "As college students in Boston, we love our hockey." I'm sure they told you all about it but each year we hold the annual Beanpot hockey tournament between BU, BC, Harvard and Northeastern. BU annualy kills the competition and it brings tons of bragging rights and pride to the school. Unlike BC, we have no football team so all we have is hockey pretty much. Sure, the basketball games are fun and soccer can be pretty cool, but theres nothing like BU hockey. It has a legacy and tradition that everyone seems to take pride in. Outside of those midwest schools like Michigan State, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Boston is the premier spot for college hockey

Massachusetts is a hotbed for high school hockey, particularly on the northshore. It's the biggest sport in many towns, perhaps partly from the French-Canadian influence - which partly traces back to employment in the old textile mills.

I'm not exactly sure what school spirit means. Your main sense of belonging comes from your friends, your roommates, the people you do stuff with. There are about a million things you can get involved in and that's your main sense of place.

when i visited in december..i saw TONS of ppl wearing BU apparel...and i was surprised by how much there was..but i loved it :)

a lot of students wear BU clothes. our athletes are particularly proud of their sport and often wear "BU WhateverSport". another thing i've noticed is that students often wear BU stuff when they're traveling to or from home for a break. i always take the Fung Wah $15 bus to new york city, and i always see kids wearing BU stuff at the boston and nyc bus stations, probably to make conversation or to easily approach fellow BU students for splitting a cab.

the beanpot has always been a bragging right, but here are a few new ones:
- last year, GQ magazine said the outdoor steps to CAS are the best place in boston to meet "all-american" girls.
- last year, BU was ranked the 3rd most physically fit college in america. this year, we fell down a bit though.
- right now, BU is the movie set location for "21", starring kevin spacey, laurence fishburne, and kate bosworth. the location is actually supposed to be MIT, but combined with some legal issues, the producers thought the BU campus was better =)

what is "beanpot"?

Figured they would have drilled this into every kid applying. The Beanpot is the annual hockey tournament between BU, BC, Northeastern, and Harvard. It is the ultimate bragging rights in Boston when you win the beanpot. BU annually dominates the tournament and it is a huuuuuge point of pride for the school. It is held at the TD Banknorth Garden on the Boston Bruins' ice. It is always packed and tickets are very hard to get your hands on. The school goes into a frenzy on Beanpot night and it is a big party when we come out on top

There are some videos on You Tube of BU kids taking the T back to school after a Beanpot victory- talk about school spirit!

Hell yeah! I was lucky enough to be there both years and the T rides back are amazing. Everyone singing "The Song" as loud as we can while rocking the T. People were crowd surfing and cheering the whole time. By the way, for those who don't know, The Song is our little gesture toward BC with the simple tagline of "F*** em up, F*** em up, BC SUCKS!" Though it was changed to rough em up. Hey, as long as BC sucks :)

Besides hockey, is there generally school spirit around? Lots of students wearing BU apparel? Cause I heard from somewhere that because MIT and harvard (yes this discussion again) are closeby, BU students can get hesitant on wearing bu stuff.

Not true at all. MIT and Harvard are all the way across the river, not even in Boston. We don't have contact with them on a daily basis. You will see tons of kids wearing BU sweats and T's. Lots of hats to. Many of them are just regular BU shirts and hats, while a huge amount are for a sport, usually hockey. No one is hesitant to wear their colors cause of Harvard and MIT.

Um, what Devilsrule says, no one cares about the other schools. If you live in Kenmore Sq, you will be next to MIT students in frats. No one cares.

BTW, housing is allowing upperclassmen to pick the Hyatt this year. They're hoping people who are going away next spring or people with lousy housing numbers will pick it.
