Hey guys! I'm trying to help my friend Mystique figure out what schools she may be able to get into and needed a little help. We are from SC and are both going to apply to University of South Carolina as a back up school. So a little background school info..

She is currently at a CC.
She'll be applying as a junior.

Into to International Relations - A
American Government - A
Intro to Philosophy - A

English 102 - B
Constitutional Law - A
Intro to Sociology - B
Brit Lit - A
World History - B
Business Law - B
Art History - B

Extra Curriculars: Volunteers 14 hours a week at a hospice. Volunteers at a local LGBTQ youth resource center. Volunteers with Habitat for Humanity. Has kept a part time job since junior year of high school.

She is also African American if that makes a difference. We were talking about maybe University of Southern Californa, Occidental, Barnard College, or Loyola Unversity of Chicago as a few places she should apply to. I would love some more school suggestions, as the time to apply is right around the corner. She's wanting to go somewhere with pretty good political science programs and all I can really advice her with is California colleges so I thought i'd come here and get some help. =D

Does she have SAT scores?

Oh i’m not sure what they are =/

She should retake that F. I don’t think Southern Cal is in the cards, but if she retakes the F and explains why she got it, that may help. Your friend has good grades but if she wants to go to a school like SC she needs better ones. Does she need aid or anything?

Uhm I don’t think so. When we talked about important factors in choosing a school she didn’t talk about money being an issue.

OK, well you will want to make sure she knows that it is hard to get fin aid as a transfer. Also, South Carolina has a great poli sci department (in my opinion)!

My only comment is that your friend might want to consider applying to Clemson as well as the University of South Carolina. Most people I’ve met tend to think it’s better than South Carolina, while it’s smaller size could help your friend feel more comfortable. It’s a public university, so your friend would still get in state tuition and admission, which is also nice.

KK thanks! I think im just going to give her my password and username so that she can look around the forum! lol.

I was looking up schools last night and was hoping that you guys could tell me if im picking too many reaches for her. I’m really interested in going to school in California and it would be awesome if she was kinda near me so i’m picking schools bassed around that (which could be a totally dumb idea)

The list I have so far is:
Oxy
California Lutheran University
Peace College
University of South Carolina (or Clemson)
LMU
Mills College

Are these too reachy or just about where she is?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

FYI tsakashvili - Clemson tends to attract more of the engineering/technical types. OP’s friend is interested in poli sci, and since USC is located in Columbia (the capital), there are a lot more opportunities for internships, research, etc.

In addition, the two campuses could not be more different so OP’s friend would need to visit to see what she is comfortable with.

bump for chances at…
Oxy
California Lutheran University
Peace College
University of South Carolina
LMU
Mills College
