School suggestions

Well, I'm pretty much torn between a couple schools. I'm very much into the humanities - English, History etc.. Math, I don't really enjoy, in fact, I don't really enjoy any logical thinking subjects. I enjoy Art, Biology and all of the humanities as mentioned previously. I play squash and badminton, I LOVE swimming.

Schools I'm considering applying to:

Groton
Andover
Exeter
Lawrenceville
SPS
Choate

I don't want to apply to a lot of schools, maybe 3 or 4. I'll be applying for sophomore year. I'm a bit confused about Exeter - Everybody says it's way too math/science oriented. SPS looks great because of the inter-disciplinary humanity programs. Groton, I also like because of the small school size. Choate - not too sure about this one yet. Lawrenceville is probably one of my first choices. Andover - Great school all-round, stellar programs and facilities.

So - My question is, which of these should I eliminate/keep? And what other schools would suit my interests? Also, my safety is my current school. BTW if you apply to one school is it an advantage since it's a guarantee to the school that I would be enrolling?

Any feedback and suggestions appreciated. Please :)

Will you have an opportunity to visit the schools? Perhaps that would help you narrow your list.

Yep. Probably will be able to.

Keep all of them! If you are international and/or need FA, that’s probably the minimum number of schools you should apply to, IMO. Since you already have a sure “safety”, the list is fine as is.

Not at all.

I’m considering Milton - DAndrew, is it good for the humanities? And any other schools that I could ADD to the list as opposed to replacing the schools that I already am planning on applying to?

I might add either NMH or Loomis. Both have institutional commitments to international diversity, good sized endowments, and strong humanities.

I did look at NMH and Loomis - They’re great schools but they don’t really appeal to me much.

I would suggest Cheshire Academy(it’s a good boarding school but I’ve never seen it mentioned on CC) I have heard it’s good for swimmers.
[Please wait…](http://www.cheshireacademy.org/default.asp?bhcp=1)

squash, squash and more squash…why not add DA to your list? I think they have something like 11 courts?

@redbluegoldgreen, really? That’s pretty cool!

Can anybody please enlighten me and dispel any of the myths/rumors that Exeter = Math Andover = Humanities? - I presumed that both, as extremely respected institutions would be all-rounders. It seems that people on the forum classify both Phillips’ as that. Is it true?

Don’t worry about those details. Apply to both and see what options you’ll have at the end of the process, and do your fine tuning then. Milton is good too, but we’ve heard people “complain” about the 50% day student ratio, which I agree could have some neg impact on boarders’ experience.

Milton’s English/History dept. is very strong, though.

How does Lawrenceville fare in the Humanities department?

lawrenceville seems like a pretty well rounded school. i heard thehy are really good in humanities, but theyre also good at science/math. they had an intel finalist this year. andover is obviously a great school but it is HUGE. SPS is also good at humantiies too.

@prepdude, you will have a better idea as to what school to aim for once you have taken the ssat. Have you taken a practice test yet? If you’re scoring in the high 80s, consider some of the GLADCHEMMS. If you’re struggling, add some safetys and continue to study over the summer. It is a good idea to start your tours and interviews in the summer. I felt the crunch of studying for the ssat, keeping good grades and completing the applications to be stressful during the fall.
Here are my suggestions outside of the 10 above ^:
Peddie, Hill, Westminster, and St. Georges.
Milton has a large day student population and may not be an ideal match for an international student.

@PreppyDude123,
Exeter originated the Harkness Method, which is essentially a class discussion. All of your classes will be class discussions, so I’m assuming they don’t have terrible English/History classes. Hopefully, it won’t be as bad as some of the English I’ve gotten. You know, where you spend six months on a 200 page book, and you get a quiz after every 10 pages…

Anyway, I’d also suggest adding Middlesex to that list. They are known for their humanities. They require all sophomores to take an intense writing course, which is supposed to be a pretty big deal.

As for your list, you have a great list there. I’m applying to all the schools on your list except for Lawrenceville and Choate, and I’m applying to a few others. Personally, I really wanted to apply to L’ville, but my parents wouldn’t let me. I actually seriously considered Choate for a while, but I heard some nasty things about it and decided it wasn’t for me. But, that doesn’t mean you won’t like it. Good luck and try to have fun applying next year.

Can you be more specific? If you’d feel more comfortable, PM me.

quick segway 2010hopeful- how do you highlight text to quote from?

[ quote] Copy and paste the text you want here [ /quote]

Once you take away the spaces inbetween the brackets, it’ll look like this:

A shortcut is to hit control B to get [ B] [ /B], then just change the Bs to “quote”.

I’m afraid I won’t be able to visit NE/USA in the summer. I’m actually going in April, but they don’t do interviews then. December is a possibility - but hypothetically if I can’t visit the campuses, do alumni interviews decrease your chance? Also, I’ve heard from a lot of people that those who don’t visit the campus, the schools don’t feel the students are dedicated enough - Is this true? I don’t want it to seem like that, but I’m visiting family in April, and my parents won’t let me revisit after a 6 month period. In any case, SSAT prep is a must which I will be delving into during the summer, but campus visits aren’t a possibility for the summer. December - still unsure about that too.
