What is a good place to get to by bus for school supplies in Ann Arbor. I've heard the stores on campus are a bit pricey. Does Meijers usually have all the stuff a student could want?

Meijers has all that.

my friend at umich informed me that meijers is basically a walmart on steroids.

Not to a be ***** or anything, but it's Meijer, not Meijers. Why everyone calls it Meijers is beyond me.

It's a Michigan thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meijer
It doesn't help that they have Meijer's Maddness either, heh

ooOoh i didnt know it was pronounced MY-ER..
i thought it was my-jer(s) ;]

Meijer will be just fine for almost everything you need.

Meijer Madness (thanks Samwise for reminding me) is a good bet--it's on September 1st, from 9 pm to 1 am, and the U will be running free shuttles down there. The store has sales, games, and giveaways. It's really something.

Should you want to get hardcore office supplies, I'd think Staples would be easiest to get to via bus because it's a straight shot out on Jackson to Westgate. There is an Office Max down by Target, and an Office Depot on the way as well (in Cranbrook Village) but that bus does a loop around Waters/Oak Valley which makes the trip longer than it needs to be. I think there is also an Office Max out at Arborland, which may be a slightly longer bus ride than out to Westgate but puts you by several potentially-useful stores (Bed Bath & Beyond, Circuit City, etc).

Meijer is awesome. If you have a card, sometimes on weekends you get like 20% off general merchandise. So like if you wanted an xbox 360, you could get the premium one for $320. That is baller, isn't it?

is there a walmart?

There's one on Ellsworth Rd in Ypsi, which is like a ten-fifteen minute drive from downtown Ann Arbor. There's also a K-mart on Maple.

Meijer can hold it's own around here. They have everything Walmart has to offer. Where I live, there's a meijer a mile from my house and a walmart 2mi away. When walmart came to town couple years ago people were making a big fuss that meijer would be done. Today it's as busy as ever. Plus, it's open 24hrs a day 7 days a week cept' like christmas day.

Unless you get some kind of huge discount (ie, you're a direct relative of the Walton's), don't bother with Walmart. Meijer has a far superior supply of cheap groceries and still has all the extra crap a place like Walmart has. The only reason people I know ever go to Walmart is if its the only place to shop in their small college town.

The Walmart in Ypsilanti is not usually a very pleasant place to shop. I find it's crowded, disorganized, poorly maintained, and understaffed. If I had a real hankering for Wal-mart I'd sooner drive to the one in Howell (about 30 minutes away).

I worked for Meijer over the summer. It's much better than Wal-Mart. A lot cleaner and employees are generally a lot easier to deal with.

Meijer is a full grocery store and a wal-mart style general merchandise section. Groceries and that are always fresh, GM stuff is usually right where it should be.

If you plan on making a large purchase (TV, X-Box, etc.), keep an eye on the Meijer sales paper. Once a month, they have a weekend where Meijer credit card holders get 15% off. And with the first purchase you make after signing up, you get another 10% off, so you get around 25% off.

and if that was enough to talk you into getting a meijer credit card, my employee number is 184431. I'll get a dollar if you put that on the bottom of your application :)

hahaha, yes those meijer deals are great on big ticket items.

In my 14 years of back to school shopping I found that Target has the best prices. All I need are notebooks (12 one subject notebooks for a buck) and binders (2-3 bucks for the avery durable ones) and they have a good selection of other stuff. You may not find some of the specialty stuff you'll find at staples, but if you can wade past the elementary school back to school stuff you can find all you need for cheap.
