School visits for the B/C students

Congrats on Oneonta as well. My D was accepted there but chose Plattsburgh for the ridiculous reason that a girl she didn’t like was going to Oneonta! It turned out fine for her but when I think back about how these kids make their decisions, I have to laugh sometimes.

My friend’s D is in the music industry program at Oneonta now. and she really likes it. She was accepted to Fred but it was too far from NYC for her. Her brother is currently at Fred.

@bjkmom He always picked out a t-shirt at each school as a souvenir, but yes, time to order some O swag!

I’m glad your daughter ended up where she belonged - it’s what we all want for our kids deep down. But wow, the journey there is rough!

I was convinced I had jinxed his acceptance by putting a pic of him in an Oneonta baseball cap on the holiday card. I was hoping that we would hear before the holidays and those who knew would get the little clue, but he didn’t and man, did I feel guilty!

Guess it’s time to start liking red

@techmom99 was she in the group that got to meet Dave Matthews? My husband, who is a HUGE fan, couldn’t believe the music industry kids got to go back stage, let alone meet him!

Any suggestions that she may have for him, we’d appreciate it! I take it she is from the downstate area as well?

Sorry to have hijacked this thread, but to bring it back around, my son was a comfortable B with the potential for A, so we aimed for the schools where he would be accepted and hoped that it would boost his self-confidence - and it did!
We went for some that give big scholarships, which I knew we would probably not attend if he could get into a SUNY for half the price and they came through.

I even sent an application to a residential community college (SUNY Adirondack) in case he didn’t get into a SUNY and wanted something cost-effective to test the waters. If your state has this, I would highly recommend it. I wish our local CC had dorms - the closest one to us is Dutchess CC and that didn’t have dorms until just recently. For the price, it’s a great way to learn some independence and get some of the core out of the way. If my son hadn’t been so insistent that he needed to go a 4 year school, I really would have pushed this more. I think I was just too worn out from the search process to have to start again in a year or so…

Here are some links to the SUNY Community Colleges with dorms - the landing pages are helpful to get a sense of size and location:

My niece attended FIT and loved living in Chelsea for the price of a dorm room! She got her associates and went right into the next semester there to complete her BA. It’s a hidden gem if you want the NYC experience and are in the arts!

I don’t know about Dave Matthews, she’s more a One Direction/Austin Mahone or whoever the catch of the day is. I don’t think Dave Matthews would register with her. She left a Springsteen concert and went back to the car, if that is any indication of musical taste! She did go to some convention/conference/show in LA the past three years. Plus, she had internships at a radio station and did the Disney program. I will say that the mom was not pleased with the school in terms of finding internships, etc. The parents found most of them through their connections. And, yes, we are from LI.

I see you are from Dutchess County. So is S17’s roommate, as well as one of his suitemates.

@techmom99 I grew up in Dutchess but currently live in Westchester.

This is the story I meant - looks like they had all the kids in the program: https://exposure.oneonta.edu/crashing-into-dave-matthews

ah, internships - the word that is my nemesis. Seniors at our HS get sent off to internships 4th quarter (smart move on the school’s part!) and apparently the kids have to find them - nothing like learning that at Christmas and they were due this week…!!

@mkisaac -

No, my friend’s D wasn’t there, she was on study away then. Our HS also does a required internship/project type thing senior year. S17 did lighting for a couple of friends who were doing shows as their project; all of them interned with a local theater companies which sponsored them. In our case, too, the kids have to find their own projects and sponsors.
