School with strong Art program for a Business Major/Art Minor

I consider myself a strong, academically competitive student.

I'd love to minor in art (such as painting, drawing, illustration...) and major in something which could blend with my art minor, such as marketing. Thus, I'm looking for schools that are strong in both fields.

As of now, I have a couple choices: USC, Carnegie Mellon, and Washington University in St. Louis (which could be a reach, haven't checked their requirements yet).

Could you recommend any other schools?

You might also look at RIT and Pitt. I am not sure what the business program is like at RIT or if you can minor in the art school, but it is worth a look. Also, don’t discount Pitt. We looked at the school for my dd for art, and she did not want to go there because the school did not offer a BFA. But, the school is really big on double majors, minors, etc and it has a really great art department. As it is such a large school, I am sure there would be somr type of marketing/communications/business type major. Good luck!

Hi College101, This topic does come up once in awhile. Some art colleges offer a major in the business of art; at Ringling it is a major in the Business of Art & Design. If you search the forums here you’ll find some other schools, as this came up recently. I would have loved this major back in the day!

Collegel0l,
I like the three schools that you have listed and I’d suggest that you add these to your pile of possibles:
1.) U of Penn
2.) UC Berkeley
3.) U of Michigan
4.) U of Texas

USC, CMU, WashU and these 4 all have what you are looking for: great biz programs and good to great art programs.

Check out Indiana University. It has strong programs in studio art and a top-ranked business school. It’s also fairly easy to double major or to do minors/certificate programs across various academic units of the University. There is also a program in arts administration.

Thanks for the answers guys!

@Wheaty: I totally forgot about UC Berkely, but it was also one of the ones I was looking into! Can’t believe I forgot about it lol And thanks for the other ones too :)

@zapfino: thanks for the useful links! I’ll definitely look into it :D

Try University of Michigan. They have great academics in general and a good art program. It also pains me to say this (as I’m going to UM), but Ohio State I heard has a good art program, as well as decent academics. Good luck!

If economics would do instead of business per se, then I would look at Williams, Wesleyan, Hamilton, Kenyon. Smith if you are female.

These schools have good art departments, good academics overall and good track records for admissions to MBA programs.

You have to research undergraduate business programs at large universities carefully. Some start first year, some in Junior year. Some are very restrictive in ability to minor in other areas.

Be sure to submit an arts portfolio even if you don’t intend to major in art. It’s a good EC at many colleges/universities.

Thanks guys!

@momrath: it’s just that I’m not sure my portfolio would be up to par with other students :S I’m planning on doing some serious paintings this year, but what I mostly do is fanart (which of course wouldn’t go in my portfolio)… So that’s why I was asking lol

I’ll see if I get good enough pieces though, thanks :)

Check out Southern Methodist University: SMU Meadows Schools of the Arts and SMU Cox Business School. Meadows offers a minor in studio art, in addition to the usual BFA. Meadows also has strong ties with the Cox Business School and offers minors in Arts Entrepreneuship and Arts Management. Some of the courses in those minors are taught by Cox faculty, and I think an Art Law course is taught by the Law School faculty (interesting side note - The Fashion Law Institute at Fordham was founded by an former SMU Law School Faculty member). The Temerlin Advertising Institute is a part of the Meadows School and offers a BA in Advertising with a Creative Advertising track, if that interests you. Best of luck in your search.
