I am a rising senior who is looking to major in biomedical engineering in college and then hopefully attend medical school. I think I will have a pretty solid application with a 4.0 uw GPA and a 35 ACT. I’m just really, really lost right now in the college shopping game. I’ve visited 10 schools and will visit 10 more schools before school starts. I’m hoping to attend a school with a decent BME program in case medical school doesn’t work out. Right now Ohio State is safety for sure (in state as well). What are some schools that would be a good fit academically for me?
Engineering in general and BME especially are poor choices for premed. It’s too difficult to keep a high GPA, the number one litmus test for med schools and will require extra classes to get all the prerequisites out of the way. Now for BME specifically, the job market for BMEs with only a BS is soft.
It is more difficult but not impossible. My nephew just did that and will start medical school this fall. It may not be a very good idea though if you are determined to go to medical school anyway. Also, for a financial consideration, it may want to finish the bachelor degree with lower cost as medical school is going to be expensive. You probably want to look at schools that you may get merit scholarships or has a lower CoA.
I know BME is not ideal for premed, but I don’t want to do biology or chemistry or physics or something like that because I think it would be even harder to find a job with just a BS in biology.
Look at Pitt - excellent opportunities for research, shadowing, pre-med advising is great. If last yrs graduation was any indicator, BMEs (out of all of engineering majors) seemed to have the most post-grad plans nailed down - mix of industry/labs, grad-school and med-school. With your stats, $10k-full tuition is possible.
@amandakayak Thanks! I’m actually visiting Pitt later this month so I will definitely pay attention.
