Note that stonybrook has no BM program and limited applied faculty availability for undergrads.

frenchvanilla that would have been a great questions to ask her. I forget where I read the qoute of Ms Wincenc, but there was no follow up in the context I read it. But it was to the effect that Julliard had 40 (out of what 150 auditioning?) some flutes good enough to win an audition and succeed there, but only spots for 4. This is the reason Willie Nelson wrote the song "Momma dont let your babies grow up to be flute players, let em play guitar, viola, oboe and such" lol

fiddlefrog that is good to know about StonyBrook, however, unless you can get into Julliard, if you want to have Wincenc as your prof, your choices are limited.

about an earlier comment... I personally know a girl who would have gotten accepted to Curtis (she got into every other school she applied to MSM, Oberlin, Peabody, Hartt, Julliard, etc...) but because of complications and strange travel issues she missed her follow-up audition at curtis. Still, Mr. Khaner called her and took her into his studio at Julliard.

Flutemom, do you have a daughter auditioning for college this year? if so, where is she looking?

I know in my original post i listed certain schools I was interested in but after some research I decided it would just be too insane to try for Mrs. Baxtresser at CMU and that CCM wouldn't be a place for me. Anyways, I'm really thankful for this forum because without it, I would've never known about Bart Fellar at Rutgers or have even really considered Roosevelt. But both schools seem pretty good. Any info about Duquesne University in Pittsburgh? Thanks, as always, everyone for being so insightful!

Next year the auditioning starts, she is a junior. With recordings due Dec. 1, that means she will have to have her pieces decided on by September, I am guessing. So its under a year until the process starts. Right now we are just compiling a long list and gathering information. We hope to seriously narrow down the list by January so we can decide which summer program would help her the most.

Are you talking about Emi? I thought she ended up in Wincenc's studio. Frankly I dont know why my daughter's teacher had us put Curtis on the list, from everything I read and hear it is a near impossible admit. For now its on the dare to dream section of the list.

Any list needs one or two dream schools. If they don't audition there, there will always be the lingering "I wonder if?"

D had one dream school on the list, had her best audition, but didn't make it. Yes, she was disappointed, but she was realistic and glad that she tried. Since she was accepted everywhere else, she would have had that nagging "I wonder if?" had she not tried. It also gives her a goal for graduate school...

My $0.02...

You mean...we have to go through all this again?

<thunk>;)</thunk>

I don't know about the rest of you, but my plan is to let daughter do most of her own worrying about grad schools.

We have had the shock of grad school made clear to us. If you are planning on music, figure on at least a masters and probably a doctorate.

I am with BassDad, by that time she can handle it herself. Of course should the time come, I will likely be back on here talking grad schools.

My son is looking at MM programs this year and I am essentially staying out of it. By now, he knows what he is looking for in a teacher and a program. He is going to have to finance it himself. I will not travel with him to auditions or examine programs for him. He has much more insight into all of that than I do. My involvement is loaning him my car do drive for visits and auditions. Other than that, he is on his own. I strongly encourage all of you to leave them to their own devices for graduate school.

We agree that graduate school should be their concern and responsibility.

I researched, applied and financed graduate school myself, so the thought of doing that for one of my children doesn't resonate with me at all.

I will admit to helicoptering a lot for this undergrad audition process, but we are novices at this. By grad school, it should be more old hat.

FluteMomLiz, you are mistaken in some of your information. Kujala is not retired and is still taking new students. I would recommend any serious high school senior to consider applying to Northwestern. The school is very good musically and offers the advantage of a university setting. It's also a great place to be frequently exposed to one of the country's leading symphony orchestras. The gigging scene's not bad either =).

He must be sooo old.He was sooo old when D auditioned for him 6 years ago.
Have the music facilities there been improved at all?

I learned NEC took only one flute last year. Typically the best only take one or two because each year one or two graduate. There is a good website called Flutes are Fun and it contains thousands of links for flutists including an entire list of every flute teacher in every university across the country. Bard has Tara O'Connor and there are good flute programs at Potsdam and Connecticut University if you are not one of the five best flutists in the country. Eva Amsler is considered good but agree with the Florida preference thing and it may be more competitive than we think. I didn't know Kujala is retiring. Is that for sure?

Oh, sorry I just read NU's response that WK is still taking students.

The flute teacher at the Hartt School is outstanding.

Hi, I’m somewhat new to the forum and I also just started (seriously) looking into music schools for flute. I’m a senior in high school, and have obviously started looking quite late into the game. I’m thinking of applying next year to schools, and might possibly enroll at Potsdam or another SUNY (or really whoever accepts me) to get core classes out of the way.

So my question is, first of all, what made you say the Hartt teacher is so wonderful? My mom found the school and from what I could see nothing looked fantastic. I still need to visit, but if the teacher is truly that wonderful than it would raise my hopes and expectations a bit.

Also, right now my list includes Eastman, Potsdam, Peabody, CMU (yeah, right (: ), Ithaca and the Boston Conservatory (only because I heard good things about it in general). IMO, the list is too short and I really have very few details on the teachers, etc. Does anyone have info on teachers specifically? I think it would be good to know where I can learn from the best flute teachers, not the best teachers in general.

I’d also prefer to stay in the Northeast for college so would you recommend any schools in that region?
Thanks!

The date of the post is May '07. Jion Wion retired from Hartt in '07, but I don’t remember if was at the start or end of that academic year. And I don’t know if thump was refering to Wion, Janet Arms or Grieg Shearer. Arms was a student of Wion. Both she and Shearer are highly respected and capable performers and instructors. Bios are here [The Hartt School | Music Dance Theatre > Woodwinds](http://harttweb.hartford.edu/faculty/music/woodwinds.aspx)

My son was an '07 Hartt grad. There are previous Hartt specific threads accessible by searching. I’d be happy to answer any specific questions but my experiences tend to be strings and chamber music.

Ken Andrews and Jill Rubio at Crane (Potsdam) are outstanding teachers.

Cwhaticando, the poster BEK has a daughter at Hartt, a sophomore flute performance major. You might want to pm her directly.
