My son is interested in schools that offer both of these programs. He is looking at Ithaca, Hartt and SUNY Purchase. We live near Philadelphia and know that Temple has a very good jazz program and Drexel, a sound recording program. His music instructor also recommended Lebanon Valley, however it is too small. Another thought is Drexel for sound technology and Curtiss or University of the Arts for Jazz. Can this be done ? Ideas ? Any school recommendations ?

This is what I have been interested in since day one and havn’t even looked at those schools at all…I’d suggest

Berklee college of music, obligatory but it has a strong jazz foundation and an amaizng music production and engineering major

Captiol University in Ohio has a good jazz studies and music tech program as well, the music tech facilities were like a smaller Berklee in terms of the equipment and stuff, it was surprsingly nice.

mcnally smith also has a good program for that as far as i have heard, havn’t done much research into it though

jacobs school of music has both jazz studies and a production/tech program

i’ll send you a link to an article i found because i forget if i can post links here…

psualum80, in the event you haven’t seen it, a good starting point is here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/957443-music-business-industry-management-technology-production.html

To me this sounds impossible. The way I’m reading it seems like you are asking if is possible to seek separate undergrad degrees concurrently at two different institutions. This brings “double major” to a whole different level . Unless degree granting institutions have a reciprocal or consortium agreement, cross registration is not allowed, and is usually limited to a specific number of credits. I recall (at one point) Curtis having an agreement that would allow students to take limited courses at Princeton, but a quick scan of their webpages does not mention anything. I did not dig deeply.

Miami/Frost and William Paterson U come to mind for both jazz and the recording technology programs. NYU might be a possibility, but I hesitate to recommend even considering it unless you have very deep pockets. They are notoriously tight-fisted with any sort of aid.

You may want to look through the jazz options here and cross reference them with PJamison’s compilation.

University of Michigan has great programs in both disciplines.

Thank you everyone, I see there is much research to be done outside of the few schools we are interested in. The links that were given will be helpful although I have not yet opened them. Also, I figured that it would be impossible to “cross-register” with different schools. What we need to do is speak with the music depts. at the schools and see what they have to say. At this point we are open and still on the search !

i take away mcnally, very brief research shows many disfavoring views from alumni, seems like a facade from that fancy website

and cross registering or attending two schools is ludicrous, i seriously doubt that would benefit anyone at all IF it was possible, which it probably isn’t. at the most you could probably take limited classes but schools don’t want to share students

I know both temple and UARTS have some kind of music technology concentration or minor (and jazz majors). Loyola New Orleans has both a BM Music Industry Program (a lot of performing and theory courses with studies in music business and technology) and a Jazz Studies Minor (which would include a lot of jazz performing and music industry–business and recording classes). Berklee also has a world class jazz based performance program and an awesome recording program. NYU also has programs in both Jazz and recording.
