Schools for Pre Med

Hey guys! I have a 1100 SAT Score , ad i would like to know what good universities I can apply to. I plan to go into pre med stuffs, so what schools do you rhink will be good.

Home State?
College Budget?
Intended Major?
GPA?
SAT subject tests?
HS course rigor such as # of AP/IB or DE courses?
Are you a Junior or a Senior?

Medical school is expensive so you want to keep your Undergrad costs at a minimum.

Home State - Texas
College Budget - I would say none, because I am an undocumented student, and my mom doesn’t work. Only my step dad
Intended Major - biology
GPA- 3.6 on a 4.0. I moved here last February
SAT subject tests I took US HISTORY AND MATH, and I didn’t do well in the us history
HS course rigor such as # of AP/IB or DE courses? I have taken AP ENGLISH, currently taking AP BRITISH LITERATURE, AP MICROECONOMICS AND MICRO, but I have taken 4 honors classes
Are you a Junior or a Senior I’m a senior

Your options in the US are going to limited. I believe Texas has the requirement that undocumented students have to have been in the state for 36 months to qualify for in-state tuition, and state fin aid. But double check that.

Will your step-dad pay anything for college? What about commuting to your local community college?

Your best option may be to attend college in your home country, as you can’t even legally work here to help pay for your college costs.

My step dad will be filling for me to become a citizen.

Unless the timing is imminent, you may have to wait to apply to colleges. Do you know the process/intended citizenship pathway?

Right now, with undocumented status you have to apply as an international student at most schools. If you obtain permanent residency, you apply as a domestic student which has higher admission rates and the ability to qualify for federal financial aid.

Instead of college budget, let me rephrase. How much can you and your family afford to pay for college each year?

As stated in the above posts, you will be limited until you get a green card so you might want to start at a community college during the green card application process is complete.

I’m not too sure, or let me say $1000ish, but not much. Abilene Christian already gave me a 64,000 merit scholarship, I just want to see what’s outside( my state)

I know I’ll have to apply as international students. But some schools offer need based scholarship

Total Abilene Christian cost of attendance this year is $48,800. https://www.acu.edu/admissions-aid/undergraduate/tuition.html

I don’t understand how they would offer a scholarship greater than the cost of attendance. But, if this is real, and they offered you a scholarship for the entire cost of attendance (or evidently more), you will not do better than that, considering you are an international with a modest SAT score.

Edited to add: Abilene Christian and many other schools will likely require TOEFL scores as well, assuming that your HS instruction prior to this February was in your native language.

Oh that’s 16,000 for 4 years sorry

Is abilene christian affordable with the $16K per year scholarship?

I’m not too sure. I can call them and ask of they will still offer me need based scholarship. Or I can try applying to the UNIVERSITY IN TEXAS.

Are there any community colleges near where you currently live that you can commute to?

That may be your most affordable option for college.

You are unlikely to be accepted to University of Texas-Austin because you will need to apply as a International applicants and your SAT is below the 25th percentile.

Also, until you receive your green card, medical school will probably be out of the question because all US med schools combined accept only a handful of individuals who are not citizens or permanent residents (under 100) each year.

https://admissions.utexas.edu/residency#fndtn-t143-requirements lists Texas residency for tuition purposes. Note the option to be considered a resident through high school graduation in Texas after living in Texas for 36 months before then, and living in Texas for 12 months before the residency determination date at a Texas public university. More information at http://www.collegeforalltexans.com/index.cfm?ObjectID=6D1466D9-AEA5-DE00-C12F3F75E7367718 .

https://www.tmdsas.com/Pre-Submission/Residency.html indicates that Texas public medical schools have similar provisions, but with a restriction to certain visa types for international students.

Do you qualify for Texas residency under the above provisions?

If so, what is your class rank in high school? Class rank is the most important admissions factor in Texas public universities.

By the time I graduate I would have lived here for 29 months. Currently I’ve lived here for 22 months. My class rank is 79/654

There is a community college close to where I live

Unfortunately, you do not qualify for Texas residency through the high school graduation provisions, which require at least 36 months living in Texas up to high school graduation. This will make Texas public universities expensive (probably unrealistically so) as a non-Texas resident.

Thank you

I just want to point out that few things in the above postings from the OP do not add up.

Abilene Christian cost of attendance of $49K and $16K scholarship leaves much of the gap for your $1000/year out of pocket budget to cover.

There is no community college that will only cost $1000/year nowadays, especially for international students.

In addition, your step dad’s green card application has no guarantee for you to get PR status, even that is doable, the wait time may be too long for you to get aids for your college education, which is immediate.

More importantly, make sure you or your mom is not a “Public Charge” or getting “public benefits” otherwise your PR application may be denied. I am no immigration experts, so I am not going to elaborate on what a “public charge” is. Nevertheless, the current government is pressing these points to reduce the success rate of legal immigrants.
