Schools in Florida???

Haha yeah, way to make it sound like there's nothing to do at UM. In reality, there is much much more to do at/around UM than any other major Florida school. But, as already mentioned, Coral Gables isn't a "college town." So, if you're looking for that kind of atmosphere where everything in the town revolves around the school, it's not for you. However, the school is largely supported by its surrounding community. And for the record, we do have sororities (just no sorority houses).

FSU's current Fall SAT average for committed students is now 1265.

See: FSU Highlights

UCF does not have higher FTIC stats.

See post #185 for comparison with UF and UM.

UF
UM
FSU
UCF (and I guess USF, I don't really know much about this school)
FAU
UNF

I'm just speaking about the schools that I know.

As far as parties... UF and FSU are similar, but FSU's bars and clubs are definitely more student friendly (i.e. 18+ most nights if not all nights). UF's bars are either only 21 and up and only offer 18+ some nights. UF does make up for this though with a stronger house party scene. I would estimate the frat parties to be about the same. Both academics are strong, but UF wins overall. FSU has a better law program and UF has a better Med school.

UM is personally the last school in Florida I would want to attend, so this may be biased. The school is definitely diverse for a private school. If your in to going out to clubs and bars (i'm not, because it's expensive and doesn't really give you the "college town feel" that I always associated with college) then this is the place for you. I would assume that the academics are great to be ranked just 3 spots below UF.

UCF is similar to UM except for the bars and clubs are (like FSU) marketed to college students. Most patrons at these establishments will either be your age or go to your school. One thing UCF does win hands down is the quality of their dorms (Knight Towers and Nike). Everyone has their own locking room and 4 people share two bathrooms and sinks, a living room (yes a decent sized living room), and a kitchen. I can't speak much for the academics. The campus is also very modern, but some people prefer the older look, which can be found at FSU and UF.

FAU is a great school with lots of resources. I would not view this as a typical college, just because of the large number of "continuing education" students and multiple campuses. This is not saying that you cannot have a typical college experience. FAU also has an up and coming athletic program (most notably their football team which played in its first bowl game). The best way to describe the party scene here is like UM, just more spread out. Palm Beach and Broward County offer great nightlife, but its usually not in the same location. For those students who went to high school in the area, they may find this school to be more like 13th grade, because the party scene in high school is similar to off campus parties here. Other schools (directional schools), such as UCF, UNF, and USF may also be like 13th grade for students from that area.

UNF is surprisingly mellow for being in such a large city. This is not to say that students there don't party, because they do. The campus is probably the most "natural", because it is in a forest. Not really, but there are ALOT of trees.

Just a note about New College of Florida. I've never been there, but what i've heard from my friend who goes there is that the students there are very "individualistic" (I think that's the nicest way to put it). The college is VERY liberal. Drugs seem to be as casual here as drinking on any other college campus. I've heard stories of "drug scavenger hunts". And I guess there is a "wall" that hosts events every weekend. Each event is sponsored by a different group (i.e. the frat night will have beer pong). Supposedly this college is harder to get into than UF, but I don't have the exact numbers. Also, the phrase "Party Hard, Study Hard" definitely applies here. These kids arn't stupid by far.

Oh yea and on the topic of weather....YOU LIVE IN FLORIDA. You're pretty much F***'d wherever you go. Although this is dependent on you as a person.

Do not pay any attention to the so called rankings (party school etc). They are completely non representative of the school as a whole (for example, less than 1% of UF was surveyed for the rankings).

A general feel of which school is better can be gained by looking at the freshman profile (middle 50% sat, average gpa, etc), but really as with any big school, it's all what you make of it. You -could- go to any of the schools and completely slack off, take easy classes and party away. On the other hand you could also apply yourself, get in with a good bunch of people and really make good use of your 4 years at any of these schools. To a degree it is not what school you go to that makes you great, it's what you do when you get there. That's just my take on things.

Florida is a piece of ****. I'm bent on going out of state. If all else fails I'll probably (very reluctantly) go to Miami Dade.

To answer questions on this survey I am a UNF student. Freshman year. I just came into the school and I was told at orientation that the school was very competitive to get into this year. I think they said the average ACT score for fall was 25 & up. I know a lot of people here who got 4.0, 1400s & up on their SATs. I know to be accepted into summer you had to have a 1000 or a 22 on ACT. I was just told that this was the most competitive class to have come into UNF. I mean I know we dont have perfect scores on ACT & SAT, but I would think a majority of students scoring up in that area is good. I mean most of the people come here, come from a broken down public school system. I mean our high school system is terrible. So I like to think we do have very intelligent students. I've even heard some have gone to ivy league for medical school.
As far as partying..I haven't seen barely any. And I am in a sorority and swimming. Most of the people here are very mellow and quiet. And it's small classrooms so you can talk to the teachers if you need help.

Btw, College is what you make it.

i am a student in Australia. I recently got accepted into the study abroad program.

I had the choice between university of Miami and USF.

I decided on USF, have i made a big mistake ?

I went with USF because i am able to stay an extra semester if i wish, it has more students and from what i have read tampa is more of a safer place than miami.
The party scene is something im considering because Australia has no party scene anywhere, regardless of what school you go to.

SO did i make a good choice ?

They're both solid schools, although as much as I hate UMiami, I hope you didn't pick USF for 'safety' reasons. There are some pretty bad areas not far from USF.

I'm a high school Sr. right now and NCF jumps out to me as a top choice. Couple questions bout life there?
1. I love that they have great drama/art/writing resources but could I find some people who'd want to go party/clubbing, too?
2. How liberal are the people - I'm kind of quirky but not ultra-liberal. I'm also not ultra-conservative and I don't go around talking about politics and stuff...but...if I'm not flower-childy and stuff will they accept me???
What do people tend to like to do there, anyone know what studnent life is like?
Thanks...

From what I've gathered, it's super liberal, although I'm not sure how politically active the students are. I've also gotten the impression that it's pretty hippie-y

9854:
You'd rather go to MDC than UF, UM or FSU?
I absolutely hated MDC when I took some DE courses there.
The students who work there have the IQ of a grapefruit.
....

How are UF and FSU for PoliSci or Int'l Affairs?
I'm trying to keep my options open while still hating UF, but if it's as great as the rankings say...then I'd rather be ostracized.

I was crunching numbers the other night--most of the colleges I'm applying to are out of state w/o guaranteed housing for transfer students. I just can't afford to live in NYC or Boston with my savings and a pt job. I know that Tallahassee is beautiful and I was raised a Cane/Noles fan, but I never looked into the academics because I had my heart set on BU.

FSU has the highest rated political science program in Florida.

Since when do average SAT scores make one school academically superior to another?

This thread is ridiculous. You can't prove one school is superior than another. They are all different in their own respects. Rankings me nothing. NOTHING.

I'm personally in love with New College. I like how it's very small (smaller than my high school) and more like a community. At big schools like UF or FSU I would feel completely lost and overwhelmed and just a number among many. The people at New College seem very liberal and open-minded, much like myself. They don't care about test scores or grades - they don't even have grades. They just want to learn.

Jman,

It does sound like New College is a good fit for you. True they don't have grades, but my D works VERY hard to Sat her contracts. While it is a rather free-spirited place and no shoes is common, you will find all kinds of kids at NCF.

NCF isn't for everyone, you really get out of it what you put into it. I agree that rankings really don't reflect the outstanding quality of education at NCF, and most elite graduate programs are aware of that.

hey guys i am in UNF doing MPH looking for transfer in miami so was looking for FIU can you help me with which one will be better FIU r UNF please help me as soon as you can ..as i am approaching deadlines..thanks
