My daughter is in the beggining stages of looking at colleges for Vocal performance. She also loves musical theater and would love to have an opportunity to study both. Does anyone have any suggestions on colleges in Texas that would be worth looking into? We are not far from Oklahoma City either and she has reviewed Oklahoma City University. Seems like a great program. Any comments?

I don’t know anything about Oklahoma City but University of North Texas is worth considering.

If you are looking in Texas the obvious choice would be Rice for vocal performance. However, they do not offer musical theater as a major even though there are a number of productions put on throughout the school year.

If one is a VP major at Rice, singing MT will be discouraged. UNT is definitely worth a look.

Also check out UT-Austin, there are some excellent teachers there too.

University of Houston should be added to your list. I met with reps from the university at Classical Singer, and I attended one of their masterclasses. By far, their class was my favorite, and their reps gave a magnificent impression. I added the school to my long list (I’ll be a junior) after the convention. They have a great opera program with good facilities. I have spoken with people from other music departments that say the same thing about Houston. On my list for Texas schools, I have Rice, Houston, UT Austin, and UNT.

Agree, at Rice MT will not be an option. You may be able to do some in the summer but not during the school year. VP majors are not generally allowed by their professors to participate in the campus MT productions.

That said, DD’s studio-mate is heading into MT career. She did all of her MT in the summers using the school year for her classical training. She had the support of the studio professor to get ready for the summers, though.

If your daughter really wants MT and classical, OCU is an excellent option. All students are required to audition for opera and musicals and the voice training comes from the same pool of teachers and is classically based. There have been successes in both classical singing and musical theatre. You can find out a lot more about OCU on the MT forum.

I agree that OCU is an excellent choice for both classical and MT.

One Texas school that hasn’t been mentioned yet is SMU. Like the other schools mentioned, it’s emphasis is on opera and classical music. Not much in the way of MT. It’s an expensive school, but they have been known in the past for really good scholarships for their top-talent students with great academic records.

Good luck!
