Schools in Western NC.

My boyfriend is currently going to a community college (CC of Rhode Island) and is looking to transfer into a 4 year college/university in or near western North Carolina (the closer to Asheville the better...this is where I live), or near the Virginia/ NC line (this is where his parents and siblings live). He would be out of state and is looking for tuition less than 15,000 preferably. And the major he is looking for is photography or journalism (minoring in whichever he does not major). These are the main concerns, but for the most part he is up for bit of give and take.

He's a musician and while he does not plan on pursuing this as a career, living in an area with a nice music scene would be a huge plus. He's for city or rural, relatively small school to huge university, public or private (as long as financial aid would likely lead to less than 15,000...), the other characteristic just aren't as important as the first three (location, price, major). Also, he's not much of a partier, but that can be avoided regardless of the vibe of the school.

Suggestions would be unbelievably appreciated!!!! (I found my dream school from a pm as a reply to a thread I made on this forum, so I know how much a quick passing of thoughts can change when it comes to stuff like this).

Suggest away! And thank you so much!!

There are three main schools in the Asheville area.

1) UNC Asheville - The obvious option. Near the main part of the city and very artsy. OOS tuition = $15,000

2) Warren Wilson - In the Asheville area but not really all that close logistically; it’s very out of the way. Smaller and more liberal than UNCA and has a gorgeous campus with very nice facilities. Tuition is $27,000 a year.

3) Mars Hill - Ditto above about location. I don’t know much about it except that it has a decent biology program. Tuition runs around $22,000.

Further south is Western Carolina in Cullowhee. It’s not really at all close to Asheville (at least an hour away) and definitely doesn’t have much going on, but it is at least cheap - around $20K per year for an OOS student for tuition + room/board.

Further north is App State in Boone (1.5-2 hours away). App is a great school in a great town. Very walkable, very scenic. OOS tuition is around $15,000 a year.

I am actually a UNCA student! As far as closeness we were ideally thinking within a 2 hour driving distance, but at this point he is becoming much more flexible, as cost is more so of a concern.

Thank you so much! App State will definitely be looked into.
