I need help looking for a specific kind of school. I visited Sarah Lawrence this past year and really liked the environment, not so much the price tag. I was wondering if there were any schools (specifically state schools) that have a similar environment. I know what you’re thinking, how can a state school be anything like a school with a population of 1,300? Hear me out. What I’m looking for is a school that’s close to a city (within an hour), liberal, politically active, with diversity in all areas (race, sexuality, class, ect.)
It doesn’t have to be a state school necessarily, even a private institution with a generous aid program could do. So far I was looking into the state schools on the west coast, such as those in Washington and Oregon. Thoughts? Thank you in advance for any help!
Depending on your academic stats, maybe some of the Colleges that Change Lives would work? http://ctcl.org/
Evergreen

You might want to check out the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges: http://www.coplac.org/. In Washington, there’s Evergreen State.
But you seem to think that public schools will definitely be cheaper than private. That may or may not be true, depending on your circumstances (e.g., your scores, your family’s income). Many public schools will not give much if any aid to OOS students, whereas private school may give significant aid (again, depending on your circumstances). Another way of saying this is consider the net prices, not the list prices. You’d need to provide more information about your situation for people to give you better suggestions.
New College of Florida
There are some small state schools that are similar to private liberal arts colleges–in Virginia there is the College of William and Mary and Longwood University. In Missouri, Truman State. In Mississippi, the University of Mississippi for Women (I think it’s co-ed now). I’ve also heard great things about Western Washington University.
Bard?
UC Santa Cruz possibly
The St John’s schools. There are two campuses for one college, one in Annapolis, MD and the other in Santa Fe, NM.
Westminster College in Salt Lake City

However, most state schools are not generous in financial aid to out-of-state students. Some are not very good for in-state students either. But some may offer merit scholarships, and some may have low list prices even for out-of-state students.
I’m not entirely sure how I’d do on the scholarship front. My GPA is 3.84, which is good. But my SAT score is 1130/1600. As far as my family’s income, we’re definitely in the range of lower middle class, making about $50,000 a year.
New College of Florida is a public LAC with a reputation for good academics, as well as a relatively low sticker price even for out-of-state students. If your family income is about $50K, then its net price after grant/gift aid (including the $15K Presidential Scholarship) and a federal direct student loan may be under $20K. Try running its online net price calculator.
