Hey everyone! So I'm looking for more LACs similar to Mac in terms of:

SAT score ranges / difficulty to get into

Liberal student body

Diversity

Focus on social sciences

Residential campus (maybe even more so than Mac, I would like a school where >80% live on campus, ideally...my favorite favorites have like 90% or more on campus.)

Any suggestions? I would really like your input, I'm looking for "match" school for my list, so the SAT range thing is really important with this search of "similar" schools. Any other schools for me?

Carleton, Oberlin, Kenyon and Grinnell are considered the most typical peer schools in the Midwest--although all of them have rural locations in contrast to Macalester's location in a nice residential neighborhood of St Paul. Wesleyan, Pomona, Brown, Tufts are similar enough that my daughter considered them as well.

Also, Macalester really isn't a commuter campus, even if a lower number (80% you think?)appear to live on campus. Living on campus is required for the first two years, after that many students live together in houses within walking distance of campus if they choose not to live in a dorm or language house/veggie coop.

In addition to Macalester, I'm applying to Oberlin, Wesleyan, Grinnell, Carleton, Vassar, and got into Bard. All should appeal at least a little to a Macalester applicant.

Whitman, Wesleyan, Oberlin, Carleton, Kenyon, and Grinnell.

Unlike Mac, all the aforementioned schools are in more rural locations. And if you're looking for a residential campus all Kenyon students are required to live on campus.

My son. who was just admitted ED to Mac, was seriously considering Bates in Lewiston, Maine. When we went for his interview, Bates seemed to have a similar feeling to Mac. Lewiston is smaller than St. Paul and the campus is in a similar neighborhood and reminded us of Mac. He really liked Bates.

Definitely look into Whitman college. It doesn't have an urban feel at all though and is in the middle of no where so if you're looking for that its one thing Whitman doesn't have.
