I really am into the idea of having a research university combined with a strong liberal arts curriculum. I’m having trouble finding schools that are similar to Tufts… any suggestions for other schools like it in the Northeast/Mid Atlantic?
Thanks!

Lehigh?
Clark U., Boston College, William & Mary,
Union in Schenectady has some overlap.
Brandeis
@moooop Do you know anything about Clark? It always comes up on my college search websites, but I never hear anything about it or heard of anyone who has gone there.
University of Richmond.
Maybe not Northeast/Midatlantic, but maybe look at Washington University in St. Louis or Rice in Houston?
Case Western if Ohio’s not too far away. Also thought of Rice and Wash U but even farther afield.
University of Rochester
Trinity College
@rysanatomy My D is at Tufts, but also looked at Clark. I really liked it, D, not as much. It’s relatively small (I think about 550/class), and she didn’t like the surrounding area (not in a great part of Worcester, and it’s an open campus, but to be fair, many also point out the great culture, restaurants, etc.). They did offer good merit scholarships. It may be worth looking into.
I also second Lehigh. We were there just this week with my S for Admitted Students day, and it reminded me of Tufts in a lot of ways. Similar size and strong research combined with liberal arts. I found the kids we interacted with to be friendly, bright, active and engaged…very impressive. However, many parents were complaining of the lack of merit aid, if that’s a consideration for you. And your child should demonstrate a lot of interest. Good luck!
Clark is an interesting place. It has about as many undergrads as a typical New England liberal arts college, but with about a thousand grad students as well. They have had great reputation for psychology & geography, but are solid in other subjects. They always like to point out that Clark is the only college in the U.S. where Sigmund Freud spoke.
Unlke most liberal arts colleges in the Northeast, its pretty campus is in a city. Worcester, MA is not the nicest city, but it’s OK, improving, and has a bunch of colleges in addition to Clark (Becker, Holy Cross, Assumption, Worcester State, Worcester Tech).
It’s a great choice for students who want a good education at a small New England college, but don’t want to be in a small town, or want the increased research opportunities that come from having significant graduate programs. It’s also a little easier to get into than schools like Williams, Middlebury, & Tufts.
Bates and Trinity (are schools in the same NESCAC league as Tufts) are also in urban locations. Of those the prettiest campus is Trinity hands down. Trinity offers engineering and neuroscience to undergrads and graduate programs in public policy. It has a high school spirit and is an athletic powerhouse in the NESCAC league, that Tufts competes in, holding current conference titles in Football, Hockey and Squash. The urban location offers a way for students to pay it forward at the Magnet School in the neighborhood, and or get internships at teaching hospital in Hartford, or in finance and insurance. Trinity meets 100% of demonstrated need and is committed to increasing Diversity through partnerships with the Posse scholars program. Students are bright, energized and engaged.
@waverlywizzard I’ve heard Trinity’s name, but I’ve never looked too seriously at it but after what you said about it, I may just have to! Thank you!!
What do you want to study?
@eyemgh I want to study biochemistry and do pre-med. I would also like to double major or minor in Italian.
Trinity has an Italian major; Bates doesn’t so I’d take Bates off the list.
I think the President at Trinity came from Tufts…
Beautiful campus. Somewhat different social vibe than Tufts. Excellent academics.
Some people hate its location - not one of Hartford’s nicer neighborhoods – but Trinity has really made lemonade out of those lemons and offers some great opportunities to students who want to do internships, volunteer, etc. Definitely check it out!
Trinity and Tufts have the same first letter. After that the differences start to emerge. Mostly around the culture of the two schools.
