Schools Similar to University of Rochester and Brandeis

Villanova = both too close to home AND overwhelmingly Catholic...I'm a Jew. I'm not asking for the school to be 100% Semitic, but I don't want to stick out like a sore thumb either. Providence carries the same Catholic problem.

American could be a good safety for me. William & Mary would be a definite reach since I'm out-of-state. Richmond would be a safe match, but not QUITE on the safety side.

WOOOH go jewish people. Being jewish was also a concern for me when i applied, and it kept me away from most of the southern schools. I believe someone already said this, but i have heard a lot of comparison between Case Western and UR, although i think Case is a bit more urban.

Case is also weak in the humanities. I'm an intended poli sci/prelaw major and I need a strong social sciences department.

Bucknell, Dickinson, Lafayette, Lehigh? Skidmore? Drew?

My d's friend, who got into both Bucknell and U of Rochester, got into Gettysburg and was offered substantial money to go there, so it might be a good safety school for you. The College of New Jersey is competitive, with a nice campus, but lots of the students commute.

Are you male or female? The all-women's colleges offer Ivy League educations but aren't as difficult to get into as the Ivies. (Unless you're male.:-)

I don't remember saying anything implying that i think i'm special. Maybe i like to stay away from southern schools because they tend to have a lot of people that use the same stereotyping against jews as you do. So stop acting like an idiot...it's people like you that make Jewish people seclude themselves.

Johns Hopkins perhaps? Has anyone mentioned Carnegie Mellon? Clark?

Is Emory a possibility?

BTW I love U rochester too, and it is great in Poly Sci.

i see you don't have a sense of humor either ;-/ but i'm glad you decided the south wasn't for your ;-)

but on a more serious note - i really find it funny when people feel the need to add in the "oh i'm jewish so i don't know if i'll fit in"...what does that have to do with anything?

it helps to make the point that you aren't really considering many southern schools and it gives a reason.

and sorry if i overreacted or whatever but thats just something i've heard way too often, and usually people aren't saying it as a joke.

My d also liked Rochester alot- (she's now a soph at Cornell). She also applied to CMU and William and Mary. Alot of kids who apply to Rochester, also apply to CMU, Tufts, Brandeis and Case Western. Whether there is a "similar feel" as they are all mid size research schools may be the reason. Whereas my d really liked CMU and Rochester, she did not like the Tufts campus and decided not to apply. There was a thread last year about Tufts- For whatever reason it gets a strong response. Some kids really like the campus and others do not. My d could not explain what she didn't like about it, but she didn't. So you may really want to visit if you can. When we toured William and Mary a few years ago during the passover/easter break, the tour guide pointed out the "passover" food area in the cafeteria. We didn't even have to ask- so I think they were going out of the way to make the Jewish kids feel welcome. Though there is not a great # of Jewish kids at Wm and Mary, there seemed to be an active Hillel. I thought this was one of the nicest campuses we saw. Though it is tough for OOS students to get in, she was lucky. (not as lucky with UVA) As it is Passover (gotta leave for sedar), can you talk your parents into visiting schools next week?? It really is a good way to check a school out during this Holiday week. If the cafeteria workers give you a blank stare when you're asking for matzoh, it may not be the right school for you. Also check out SUNY Binghamton. Good in the social sciences and very reasonable OOS tuition (under $11,000) . Suny Bing is probably the most prestigious SUNY going. Of course SUNY and prestige don't exactly go together. But you can get a very fine education. Personally- I think the ed. you can get from Binghamton is on par with Lehigh or Muelenberg (that may be another school to check out too). Good luck
Just another thought--though I never saw it, Emory might fit the bill too.

Lehigh also = horrible in my intended major (poli sci.).

Muhlenberg would be an extreme safety for me. SUNY Binghamton would also be a safety.

Here's my total college list as of now:

Reach:
Emory
Tufts

Level:
Rochester
Brandeis

Safety:
Penn State (I'm in-state, so why not? Pretty much a guaranteed in...)
Pittsburgh (See Above)
Rutgers New Brunswick (Good for poli sci...not too far from home)

Syracuse is close to 30% Jewish IIRC, if that is what you are looking for. Have to agree on Emory and Tufts as well.

Does Syracuse have a campus?

Yes. Go to www.syracuse.edu

Syracuse also has one of the best sporting arenas in all of college sports (in my opinion, of course), the 55,000 seat Carrier Dome.

Hmm...I suppose I can apply there. It's a safe match / high safety to ne and if I don't get into my top choices, I could give it a closer look.

Just out of curiosity, what are you looking to major in?

Political Science (Pre-Law)

University of Richmond

That could be a safety, I suppose. It's decent in poli sci...

Any other thoughts?

Drew University has a good poli sci program and it would be a safety
