Schools that are financially generous toward transfers?

So my current school’s financial aid department is not being helpful at all in terms of helping or directing me to financing options after my mom has been in and out of the hospital this year. So due to financial aid and other departments being inadequate in non-financial circumstances, I’ve made the decision to transfer for the Fall.

I missed some of the deadlines already:( I didn’t officially decide to transfer until a few weeks ago. I already took some time off school and was part time for some semesters so I really would rather not delay completion of my college degree any later.

I’m a late sophomore atm and I have a 3.56 gpa with a decent amount of EC’s. Here are the schools I’m definitely applying to:
-University of Wisconsin (missed Fall deadline but there’s a special commuter tuition and one of the best Real Estate programs so definitely worth considering applying for the spring)
-Indiana University
-Ohio State
-Northern Iowa

Other schools I’m considering for the Fall:
-UCF
-Maryland
-UConn
-South Carolina
-VCU (deadline already passed but they’re doing late considerations)
-UGA (Spring Admission)

Does anyone know how financially generous these schools are for transfers? Need based or need blind?

Any other schools to recommend? There aren’t any other schools with real estate programs in my state unfortunately:(

What is your budget?

Many of the OOS publics won’t give transfers any financial aid beyond loans and work-study.

Assuming you live in Wisconsin since you mention a commuting option at UW, that will probably be your cheapest option. Some of the neighboring state schools may have reciprocity where you can receive in-state tuition rates.

Out-of-state public universities typically give little or no FA, whether you enter as frosh or transfer.

In-state public universities may offer FA on the same basis for both frosh and transfers, but not all states have good FA from their public universities. However, merit scholarships are often less common for transfers anyway.

For Wisconsin, you can try its net price calculator at https://financialaid.wisc.edu/net-price-calculator/ to get an estimate. It asks for your FAFSA EFC (use https://fafsa.ed.gov/spa/fafsa4c/ for an estimate), state residency, frosh/transfer/continuing, dorm/off-campus/commuter, and whether you will be engineering or business major.

Other colleges will also have net price calculators on their web sites.

I’m from Illinois. I know about the net price calculators but I don’t know really how much my family makes and such, I just know we’re middle class but we won’t show much income this year because my mom was out of work for months even before the coronavirus. My current school there’s not really any need based scholarships and the financial aid department is hard to deal with. How about any schools that are good with students experiencing hardship?

All I know is after scholarships from my current school which is a private school was $30,000 a year which is too much. I transferred from cc with a pretty bad gpa so I was hoping now that I have a higher gpa I can receive more aid.

You have to work with your parents to understand what your budget is. Your FAFSA for this upcoming school year will be based on 2018 financials. If your family’s situation has changed you would have to ask for professional judgment…basically a review of your situation. But first you have to fill out your app and be accepted. Have you asked your current school to review your situation based on your mom’s job loss?

What 4 year public schools in Illinois can you commute to? UIC? NIU? ISU? UIUC?

What are you referring to when you say real estate program? A real estate major? What are your career goals?

Search school websites for “transfer scholarships”.

Susquehanna is very generous and I think Lycoming and Ursinus offer transfer scholarships.

My d was offered excellent merit scholarships at Wheaton (MA) and Susquehanna as a transfer, but even with those, the net cost was about what you’re currently paying.

yes they told me to fill out this form but after being transferred literally 4 times in one phone call they eventually said that it might not even count for Winter and I would have to take out a private loan.

Either way the form would take too long and make me miss even more transfer deadlines than I’ve already had.

None of them have my program. And I prefer a major rather than a minor or certificate.

The safest bet is an in-state university. You’re likely to get the best financial aid based on your parent’s income. You could try a private school, but be sure to check out the Net Price Calculator before you apply. Generosity can vary widely, but don’t hold your breath, because it’s not uncommon to get short-changed at the last minute.

What is this special major that you must have?

My suggestion…take the out of state public universities OFF of this list. You are not going to get sufficient aid to attend these schools. You are OOS, and a transfer student. Your family isn’t paying taxes to support these schools. They charge OOS students a higher rate because they expect to get that higher rate.

As an Illinois resident, look at some of the smaller directional universities, Northern Illinois, for example.

Is there any public university in Illinois where you can commute?

What can your family pay per year?

I already said in-state is not an option multiple times… My major is Real Estate. There aren’t any public in state schools that offer an UNDERGRAD program in Real Estate.

I live close to the Wisconsin border so that’s why I’m strongly considering UW. And I don’t know what my parents can pay but like I said earlier currently tuition is about $30,000 with scholarships, and actually after looking at my bill today it’s probably more like upper $30k’s. Just going off estimation $20k-25k/year is the most they could pay given everything that’s been going on.

So I got my final grades back for the quarter. So far have all A’s just waiting for one more class. So looks like I’ll probably be at a 3.75 minimum! If anyone knows of other schools I could into with great aid let me know! I also noticed some schools, being in the Honors College opens you up to more scholarships too.

I really doubt you would get the Commuter rate at UW just because you are close to the border. There is an OOS rate that is higher.

Or maybe MSEP options?

Remember schools are going to look at **all of your grades ** when it comes down to awarding merit. does your current 3.75 GPA include the cc, where you said you had a pretty bad gpa?

No that’s just my gpa at my 4 year school.

im 5 minutes away from the border. So it would take me an hour to get to school. I’m close enough to actually commute from my house. We will see if that’s close enough. And thank you for the link for the MSEP schools I will look into those schools:)

When you send your transfer applications, your GPA at your community college will also be considered. The upward trend will be nice for these colleges to see…but that community college transcript is a required submission for all college applications.

Yeah I went from a 2.7 to a 3.75ish so hopefully they will base gpa requirements on my current gpa rather than averaging the two.
