Schools That Care More for SAT's than GPA

So, I have a bad GPA, mainly because of my busy schedule and bad study habits (around a 3.1)

My SAT scores are as follows

CR 610
Math 690
Writing 600

I'm looking to go to college in the Virginia / North Carolina area , seeing as I have family down there.

I'm a New Yorker, so OOS . NY currently has the top ranked public school system in the US, so hopefully that boosts my chances.

My question is, what are some good schools in those states that I can get into? I'd really like Va Tech, but I've heard it's a GPA driven school, and that they don't consider interviews in the application process.

Thanks in advance!

Try JMU or ODU

Uh, I don’t think so - to both parts of the statement. NYers, especially on the East Coast are over represented. Can you pay VA/NC costs OOS?

Not to debate, but I’m certain that NY has the highest public education standards, and I’m not trying to be arrogant, it just is what it is. And I can somewhat afford the OOS cost, if I got in to any of the schools, I would be willing to leave with some debt.

My S has a very high SAT score (2200 overall: 770 math, 720 verbal, 700 writing) but a mediocre GPA (3.35), partly because ours is a VERY rigorous high school and limited opportunities for weighted classes. Can anyone provide recommendations for good schools (we live in CA), OOS is ok if there is some money available (not need-based).

hahahahahaha…Hint: try looking at the “Nation’s Report Card”

4th grade math…National average = 39% Proficient. NY = 40%. Mass = 57%

8th grade math…National average = 32%; NY = 34%. Mass = 51%.

I would not count JMU in you list --the avg. admitted gpa is higher. Look at:

-Guilford (NC)
-Goucher (MD)
-Virginia Commonwealth U.
-Warren Wilson (NC)
-Randolph-Macon (VA)

Add Randolph College as well. They are only a few years into coeducation, and are looking for males. Being from the North and a guy could give you a leg up.

Collegeyikes, take a look at Alabama. While they are looking for a 3.5 GPA, they will consider a weighted one. Your scores definitely sound good. You may qualify for full OOS tuition. [Out-of-State Scholarships - Undergraduate Scholarships - The University of Alabama](http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out_of_state.html)

They have been very aggressive about recruiting top students and currently have approximately 43% of the student body from outside Alabama. The Honors College is quite well regarded.

Take a look at the Alabama forum here on CC for more grass-roots information.

“bad study habits”

Dealing with that is SOOOOOOOO much more important than finding a college right now. You need to have a sit-down meeting with your guidance counselor and the school psychologist, and find out the best ways to develop the study skills you need for college. Don’t go spending your money on college until you are truly prepared to do the work.
