I honestly had not thought of this before, but was looking at Lees McRae in North Carolina, and apparently it is possible to have a pet there. Website says there are 30 pets on campus, including, it looks like, some dogs. Are there other colleges like this? Has anyone tried keeping a pet in college?
Eckerd allows pets and has a special graduation for the pets the day before the students graduate. If I can find a link I will come back and post an article about it later. More and more schools have a service learning house where students raise a puppy who will eventually become a service dog, but that’s not an individual pet. And, of course, if you live off campus you can have a pet if your lease allows it.
I was recently told by a Pitzer student that they can have them. However I just looked up the student handbook and unless it is a service dog or possibly an emotional support this does not seen to be true see p 33

Here’s a link - with video of the Eckerd pet graduation.
Thanks – I didn’t realize that about Eckerd. Good to know! That is one of the schools she is applying to. Loved the video!

Google does it again!
Thanks! – my google search did not come up with that one. Need to work on my googling skills . . . I had no idea that Cal Tech had so many cats on campus.
Stetson University in Florida is a pet-friendly campus. I was accepted with a scholarship, but decided to attend elsewhere.
@janjmom, thanks for posting the video about Eckerd. That is actually the President of the College handing “diplomas” to the pets. My daughter’s roommate had a pet rat, (ugh). They have a pet council and pet park too.
If you plan on moving off campus after freshman year, a number of houses and apartments allow pets.
-Eckerd College
-Stephen’s College
-Washington & Jefferson College (Two buildings)
-Principia College
-Cal Tech (Cats)
-University of Illinois at Urbana (One building)
-SUNY Canton (Pet wing, no dogs, snakes, or birds)
-MIT (Cats)
-Stetson University
-Sweet Briar College (Horses)
-Lees-McRae College (They actually bring pets to class, not sure how practical that is.)
I believe the Ecology House at Cornell allows small pets in cages/aquariums.
Just make sure you check the school requirements for the pet. When we visited Eckerd I believe they said the pet had to be in your family for a minimum of 10 months. I believe there also was a size limit and you may have had to wait until second semester.
