Schools that were avg. that are now Competitive

Which schools when you think of them 5-10 years ago were good schools, but not great and were adequately competitive are now getting really tough to get into - or have seen a marked increase in talented students apply.

USC comes to mind

I don't know about the last 5-10 years, but I know boston U. has gotten a lot more applications and is becoming harder in great part due to its urban location- especially in Boston the college city of all college cities

Occidental is also a rising school--even several of the UC schools, especially Davis & San Diego.

University of Florida, I believe.

Wake Forest

ucsb.......

uconn, northeastern

Kenyon was not average before, but it has become MUCH more competitive in the last four or five years.

Too numerous to name, and would certainly include virtually every private college in California,

Seems like a lot of public schools

Northeastern, BU, NYU

vassar, Hamilton, CMC, Davidson, Villanova, College of New Jersey, Macalester

Years ago I thought of Colgate as a good, solid school. If the caliber of the local students who have applied recently is any indication, Colgate is a much, much more competitive school than it used to be. Bucknell seems to be another school that has kicked it up a notch or two.

University of Connecticut

It will be interesting to see where some of these colleges are in 10 years when there won't be so many students applying. Will any be able to sustain their selectivity?

Skidmore is also getting more competitive.

James Madison, Towson, & SUNY Geneseo

Boston College
George Washington
University of Florida

UCSD has moved out of the mid-level UC group and is now knocking on the door of the Berkeley/UCLA club.

BYU has gotten more selective. Used to be that most of the Mormon kids we knew who wanted to go there got in. Now even some of the pretty bright ones get turned down.

WUSTL and USC have also moved up.
