I love musical theater but for many reasons have decided not to make it my career path. However, I'm looking to transfer schools and would love to find one that allows me to pursue musical theater in activities or classes or a minor. West coast, preferably California. I am doing my own research as well of course, but can anybody recommend some schools to me?

USC.
they have a MT minor, as well as a student-run company that puts on minimum two musicals a season in addition to the spring mainstage musical that the school of theatre produces.

Yes, Jason Robert Brown is a faculty member there!

I have the same question, but for the east coast. Any suggestions?

On the East Coast I think the Skidmore has an active student directed group that produces musicals quite a bit.

In general, I would suggest looking for schools that do musicals, but do not have a concentration or major in MT. Even if the auditions are open to all students it is likely that the MT students, or theatre students (who are focused on that training) would be cast more often than students in other majors with an interest in MT. Sometimes this will be the policy, other times it is simply that those students are further along because they are training consistantly.

However, you may find some larger universities where there are extra-curricular groups that produce musicals that are not connected to the MT program. I do not know if it is still the case, but at Penn State there was a student group that produced musicals that was almost all non-majors.

Good Luck!

Muhlenberg College in PA would be a good choice. Any student in the college can audition for one of their productions and its a very respected liberal arts college.

Indiana University - Bloomington - in the middle not the coasts but great training and from what I have heard a ton of production opportunities. I have heard of roles being given to students with a variety of majors so they don't just say audtions are open to all...they have actually done it
