Schools with full tuition for national merit finalist

they are very very similar

I googled Federal Byrd Scholarship and Alaska...nothing comes up. Is this only available in certain states?

The Federal Byrd is given out in every state. It is not necessarily numbers driven: My S, who is commended, got it in NJ, but the NMSF in our school did not. They had to write an essay (on the spot, timed) for the final decisions. Each state does it differently.

probably a good time to put this back up

You're right, it's a great asset. I just googled it up in response to a question in another thread and was going to link to it.

BTW, could you do me a favor? It's Abilene Christian, not Abiline. Didn't go there, but it is my home town. ;)

fixed the spelling

Oklahoma link doesn't work.

fixed that one

Here's a link for the Robert C Byrd program in Alaska

don't forget there are a lot of schools that offer full tuition to many students, not necessarily just NM finalists

Thanks, l_j. :D

l_j, thanks for the great service you've performed.

Whether or not it belongs on the list, I'll mention that Hope College in Holland, MI, currently provides four years of $17k/year to NMS Finalists who name Hope as their first choice. Tuition is currently $21,420.

Does anyone have insight into what Duke may offer for NMSF?

Sorry to inquire with what may be a dumb question, but will any schools be contacting my NMF daughter even tho she hasn't applied to them? I should have seen the list earlier (before Jan 1) but we're new at this, and d applied to mostly elite NE schools not known for their generosity with aid. Now that we're actually going to have to pay for this, we're wondering about alternative offers now. Any insights will be appreciated. Or does one just wait and see if one of the few merit opportunities are thrown her way (Ecols @ UVA, BU merit). Is it true that the Ivies give no merit aid, or can they couch some merit as financial/other?

Ivies dont need to offer merit aid to attract students
Other very fine schools may offer merit aid- some also can tweak your financial aid forms that take things into account that other schools who strictly operate off FAFSA EFC do not.

Cosmopolitan - some schools (like Bowdoin) replace your loans with grant aid if you are a NMF - but parents still have to contribute their EFC. Some of the ivies tend to be generous, but still work off your EFC. Non-ivies a peg down seem to be more flexible.Schools with good aid for NMF still accepting aps- I think The Collage of New Jersey has extended their ap deadline to March 1st, and they are a pretty decent school.

I was messing around the other day with my page and it is very out dated, I think come fall I will re work it and put out a new and improved version. Most of the colleges and universities up date thier scholarship info at the start of the fall term so thats the best time to "mine" the web sies for up to date information. Hopefully I will have the time and motivation to make a good curent list

is it time to update this?

time for an update!!??

yes please

If you made NMSF you will receive a lot of scholarship information directly from colleges that offer big NM scholarships.

How does this merit scholarship thing work with respect to picking schools for score reporting?

My daughter has been scoring 99th percentile on PSAT's, but this one "counts" because she's just started 11th grade. We are in a competitive county, but if she does become one of the 15,000 this year, I don't want her to screw-up the school picking part of things.

I see some schools require you to put them in the top slot to be considered for the full-ride scholarship. But this seems to be a small minority. 1) Is my perception accurate?

2) I scraped the referenced web page and all of this thread into a spreadsheet*. Some of it seems dated. Is this thread the best source for NMF full ride data on the Internet?

What if you don't put any schools down and you "make it" as a NMF? Something I read here indicated that some schools will do mailings to all 15,000 kids, even if they didn't put that school on their list. 3) So will the schools come to us, or will that be a small subset of schools that offer full ride?

4) So what is the best school listing "strategy"? I have proposed to my daughter that she discover where they offer full ride to NMF, and where she might want to go, and put those on her PSAT in case she makes it. So she would be leaving-off the schools that offer less than full ride, but that she might actually end-up attending. 5) So will the merit offer from the non-listed school be reduced if they're not on the list?
