schools without a party reputation

I'm looking into a small LAC in the midwest but want to find a school with a like-minded student body. I know that all schools have party crowds, but that they are more prevalent at some schools than others. Out of the following schools, which would have a larger percentage of students more interested in academics than partying?

Lawrence University
Knox College
Grinnell College
Millikin University
Clarke College
Ripon College
Denison University

Also:

Ohio Wesleyan, Kenyon, Allegheny, Oberlin (although I heard there is a lot of pot smoking there...). Stay away from schools where the Greek system dominates the social lives of the students.

uni. of chicago, some greek but mostly geeks.

rice, completely without a greek system

denison is definitely a party school.

have you party-haters ever actually tried partying?

alot of people don't realize how fun getting wasted and having unprotected sex is. personally i think its ignorant to purposely go to a college with no partying... especially if you haven't partied before. furthermore, partying is as essential to college as windbag profesors are.

ya dig???!!!

Yeah, but the biggest campus event of the year is called Beer Bike. If anything, many Rice students take pride in their parties, but balance this with extreme dedication to school work. The OP should consider this: partying and academics are not mutually exclusive. If you're really, really uncomfortable with the idea, that's your choice to make, but if your only actual experience with partying is from horror stories you read about binge drinking in Reader's Digest, you might not rule out "party" schools entirely.

The students at Grinnell and Lawrence are serious, and the schools are not "party schools." Denison has been working hard to try to play down its historical image as less than a serious academic environment; you should visit the college to see if it has succeeded. Do not know about the others.

might want to look at earlham- great LAC with a dry campus

Lehigh Univerisity is a party school, but they are trying to crack down on that.

I'd disagree with the recommendation for Ohio Wesleyan. It's a really good school, but from what I've heard (including from a friend going there), it's most certainly a party school.

Also check out Carleton.

Grove City, Brigham Young

There are parties at every school, but "partying" is less intense at the more selective schools and at schools with a religious affiliation, although there is some heavy drinking at the Catholic affiliations like Notre Dame, Villanove, and BC.

You are wise to look for schools with less partying. Drunks and drug users ruin it for everybody. They are scum.

Really? I mean, you're free to feel that way, but most of the people I know who drink or use drugs do just as well in classes as those who don't. Maybe you're referring to something else that they ruin, but I'm not sure what that might be.

The majority of small LACs have done away with Greek life all-together. Try schools like Bates, Carleton, Earlham, Geneva, Grinnell, Haverford, Marlboro, etc.

U Chicago would be another good one.

check out princetonreview.com, they have rankings of schools that are dry and party free.

http://www.princetonreview.com/college/research/rankings/rankingCategory.asp?categoryID=3

there's the link...I absolutely love the princeton review's lists.

yeah if you're looking for small lac in midwest without partying, lawrence

there isn't too much going on in appleton, I live here.

"Drunks and drug users ruin it for everybody. They are scum."

If you mean abusers then yes, you are correct.

why would you want to go to a school without parties?

this would really hinder your college expierence

at least try drinking before you write it off

I agree with you beenyblanco..

Why would you want to go to a school w/o parties, im pretty sure every college campus or most have parties..

Not without parties, but without the reputation for parties. Some schools that have a party reputation have NO other social life beyond going to parties. That can be limiting.

I find parties to be kinda boring, to be honest, and getting drunk gets old fast. Though having a social life and meeting new people is always fun, it's always great to have something ELSE to do that's not necessarily going to a party.

yeah, but tons of schools, even those who do earn reputations of party schools, are generally large and diverse enough to offer alternatives on the weekends.
