Ranking in temrs of personal preference, i turned down the following schools for u of c:
1. Rice (fantastic school, but nobody in illinois has heard of it, and im not sure it's the perfect school for a raging liberal...texas? uggh.)
2. Northwestern (a good school for anyone who wants to become a journalist or actor, but pales in comparison to u of c's liberal arts curriculum. plus, not that any self-respecting u of c student would care, but it's a little less prestigious/selective)
3. Boston College (read the "raging liberal" comment above.)
4. Holy Cross (same deal)
5. Loyola U (full ride scholarship, but please)

UT, CMU, and rice-waitlist.
rice/uchic were always tied for topchoice. if i got into both i'd have had the hardest time deciding (but would probably go with chicago).

No contest, really. I'm not even sure why I applied to 2-4, in retrospect I would have applied to Chicago, LC, and maybe Barnard.

Darren: Please share with us the reasons for turning down Michigan Honors for Chicago. I am leaning the other way (accpeting U Mich Honors in stead of Chicago). I have yet to finalize....your thoughts will be very valuable to me.

My reaosns:

I want to broaden a little from my geekyness (geekyness environment of Chicago intially attrected me there).

I am not certain of my major. UM ranks fairly high in nationally in many majors (and yes Chicago ranks a little higher). However, my current plan is to go into law

$$. Michigan will cost me $25K less.

I would REALLY appreciate it if you can share.

Seriously like most ppl will tell you, Umich Honors IS an oppurtunity most kids will give anything to get into..so save your money...Uchicago is a very good institution but Umich is not far behind, considering you got into honors..for me my decision was simple, i am sponsored for all 4 years..so money is certainly not a problem...and also i will be majoring in econs..uchicago or umich? uchicago will be the obvious choice...=) If u can afford 25k, i hope to see u in the fall...=) i am not an expert..just sharing my thoughts..hope it helps!!!

Scrub: u chose uchicago over duke too?? cool....
yt660: uchicago over LSE? what will you be studying?

I'm planning to major in Economics

That's a very interesting choice...both schools are equally good for econs..=) i'll major in econs too...=)

i rejected umich honors to attend uchicago.

just like i rejected uiuc, barnard college (columbia), and university of kansas (honors)

1) Lawrence University
2) St. Olaf College

Nothing great, I know. I applied to them only to appease my mother, who was concerned that I would not be accepted to Chicago.

But honestly, if I had not been accepted, I might have waited and then applied again.

Tiffanyeatsrame: I would really appreciate it if you can share your reasons. As I indicated earlier, I am leaning towards rejecting Chicago for UM Honors.

My reaosns:

I was more impressed by U MIch campus and people vs. U Chicago (may be had bad luck and came across guys that were different than my expectations)

PLEASE HELP with your thoughts.

I would REALLY appreciate it if you can share.

haha, well, it sounds like you already know that you want to go to umich, and i agree that umich is a GREAT school, but a huge part of my decision was that UChicago gave me more aid than Umich.

I also want to go into Classical Archaeology and Umich has one of the top programs in the classics... and a GREAT classical archaeology grad program...but chicago had the interesting courses that I really wanted to take, and Chicago's archaeology program isn't half-bad. ;)

also, i decided on uchicago because michigan is HUGE. i was afraid that i'd get lost in the crowd there.

when i visited uchicago, i stayed in broadview which i guess is an "anti-social dorm" but it wasn't at all. it was really laid back and my host took me and a few others to the Point and we all played frisbee and talked for like, two hours. it was really awesome, and really pretty.

i dont know, i wouldnt base a college decision based on one overnight but i guess you had a pretty damaging experience?

basically, both uchicago and umich are GREAT schools, but i think michigan would be better for me as a grad student than an undergrad, because i don't want to be in a class with 342973892732 people... and although i would be a part of the honors program and it sounds like a great honor (for the lack of a better word) i don't know if it quite matches uchicago's selection of interesting classes... i mean, i sat in on a medieval literature class and it was mind-blowing. the professor was crazy and it was a breath of fresh air to be in the same room with people who actually cared about learning. i am not sure i could get that at umich because it is a huge public school and not all of my classes would be from the honors program....

another factor in deciding was the city of chicago. i love chi-city TO DEATH. it basically is like my second home.

i know umich has like, a crazy insane 5 billion dollar endowment which is in the top 3 of all public universities...

uchicago's law school i pretty competitive, but i know it's great. umich has a good law program, too, but wasn't there an affirmative action fiasco some years back? i don't know, i guess it doesn't really matter. hehe.

i guess you have to think about opportunities, too. you have a hard decision to make and i guess if you want to move away from home to experience college, chicago would be a great city. and i know for sure that not everyone at uchicago is like the guys you met there. uchicago kids are geeky, but they also know how to have fun. the class of 2010 is pretty awesome... you might want to check out thickenvelope (website for admitted uchicago students) and just look around and get to know some of the class of 2010 kids? i just think uchicago kids generally love to learn and i know you wouldn't just be a number at uchicago. but umich is a great school, and if it's 25k less, why not? ....but something is holding you back, obviously, from choosing umich outright. :)

if you want to talk about it further, PM me.

p.s. uchicago was also my top choice, so i guess that was a factor, too. :) umich was definitely in the top 3. also, the honors program told me like, 2 weeks ago that i was in and it was kind of a late notice (i had already made up my mind about uchicago) which was like, "hmm, ok"
