With respect to Michigan's honors program, how many courses are actually "honors classes" - that is, smaller classes with top students? Doesn't look like too many from reading their website. When comparing Chicago to U of M - honors, make sure you know what you are getting with Michigan's "honors"

tiffanyeatsramen: Thanks for your thoughts. I come from a large public high school (613 students in my class), so I hope size would not detract me from seeking deep academics. At the same time I am hoping that hanging around Honors students (Umich has special dorm for them if one wants it). and the fact that the honor course class size is smaller....will help. I am told that the opportunity of research is available for honors students starting freshman year. These are the things that I hope will make-up for where Chicago does have an edge.

My other challenge is not knowing what I wantto major in. It seems UMich had broader ranges of courses. So if I did double major then both majors will be from good reputation faculty. But I truly worry about missing out "intellectual depth" that Chicago is known for.

I am thinking that Chicago will be great for graduate school and the money I save...will help.

If Umich offered you more money would you think differently? It has been gut wrenching

i think you do have to take into consideration that chicago has its "intellectual" reputation for a reason. it was quite obvious that the students pride themselves in being taught by renowned faculty members and being in an academically challenging environment. but people were really down to earth and nobody talked about SAT scores and whatnot. umich probably has a broader range of courses since its undergrad program is incredibly ginormous compared to uchicago's, but i thought uchicago's course offerings were pretty impressive.

if umich had given me anything close to a full ride, i probably would have considered it harder, but i'm pretty sure i would have chosen uchicago over umichigan anyway. i just think i would have a distinct college experience at uchicago, and that's just me.

and i am planning on double-majoring and minoring at uchicago. i don't know how possible that is but i am going to try.

if you had the opportunity to do research your first year, would you? what would you do? i mean, you said that you didn't know what you wanted to major in. is there a particular field you are leaning towards (toward?)

...and just for kicks:

some notable uchicago alumni:
john ashcroft, kurt vonnegut, john scopes, jocelyn carter-miller, jesse jackson, donald johanson (he discovered "lucy"), mike nichols (directed "the graduate"), saul bellow, david rockefeller, susan sontag, john paul stevens...

umich alumni:
lucy liu, gerald ford, selma blair, ANN B DAVIS ????(brady bunch's ALICE!), 116 olympic medalists, arthur miller, the founder of walgreens, sanjay gupta (TIME medical columnist)

AND indiana jones went to uchicago, harry & sally (in when harry met sally) went to uchicago, and cameron diaz's character in my best friend's wedding....

Uchicago education is worth the extra 25k..come join us..but if you really wanna save the 25k, always remember umich honors is also a very good choice..so don't pressure yourself too much coz you will never go wrong with both schools..

It is $25K/yr or $100K over 4 yrs. If U Chicago gave me more money it may be different.

I'd go with Mich Honors. I honestly don't think it's worth that much especially if you are happy with mich.
That's a LOT of money, I was thinking so hard when it was 25k over 4 years and i just decided to go to the more expensive school.

seriously, 100k is too much..as much as i want you to join us...uchicago is a tremendous school but to spend extra 100k for undergrad is too much...at least for me...

Like i said I had a hard time picking a school I loved when it cost 20 k more over four years. I wouldn't even have thought about it if the total cost was 100k let alone 100k more (i get finaid btw).

I turned down UMichigan Honors w/Ross Pre-Admit. The financials were about the same (OOS for both). It just "felt" like a better fit for me, although I will admit that if Michigan was $100k cheaper than Chicago for me I would have had to make a very difficult decision

Daren_s, The Pessimist, tiffanyeatsramen : All of you have been very helpful. I could not be more thankful. I will definately miss my first love ..Chicago....but I have to with my head vs. heart.

Good, you've made a good decision. There's always Chicago for grad school.
:-)
Work hard and you'll get to Chicago for Grad school when it matters much more!

you're always welcome..you know, it's a pity we can't have you with us but the best for you is to save the 100k..so good luck!!!=)

I am at the moment vacillating between Rice, UChicago, and Georgetown.

: (

None. I did not apply for aid anywhere.

The decision is not a financially-based one.

Then Uchicago is my choice for you..but it still depends on what you will be majoring in.

haha Daren... Yup, I chose Chicago over Duke too. I guess location played out a lot when I was making a decision... but in the end ( and I say this with my newfound Chicago pride), I just had to choose the best... haha... :)
