science at dartmouth

just out of curiosity how well does dartmouth's science department rank and what are its strengths and weaknesses, i've heard that thayer engineering isn't to hot but what about the other fields?

From my understanding (not an engineer but some of my friends are), Thayer's just different. They want everyone to get some experience in all of the major engineering fields, so that they're more able to work among or between different areas. That's why a lot of Dartmouth engineers enter business or engineering management. That's what makes Thayer different; it doesn't make it not hot.

Wisconsinguy is spot on. Science is good, especially because of the grad school placement. Its very undergrad focused, but that means lots of opportunities and good recommendations.

My daughter just finished a chem course and loved the thought that the professor took the time to write a personal note to everyone in the class and give it to them the last day of class. In addition, the prof told them as they move on, if they needed help in their next course, or any chem course, recommendations, etc. just ask. She felt she definitley wouldnot have had this experience at a school that wasn't so undergrad focused.

WISP (Women in Science Program) offers opportunities, for reasearch and internships beginning freshman year.

This past fall she also took a bio class with Professor Lee A. Witters M.D. Chair, Dartmouth College Health Professions Advisory Committee
Eugene W. Leonard 1921 Professor of Medicine & Biochemistry, Dartmouth Medical School (also a pre-med advisor), who she feltwas an excellent professor and is one of the most gracious people that she has ever meet. She was a little intimidated by him at first because she thought someone in his position would really not have time for a lowly freshman, but she said he was wrong. The one thing she has walked away with is that all of the professors really take their time with you and are truly looking out for your best interest.

yea.. im interested in the life sciences/ maybe chem as well... How are the lab facilities? I remember passing the science buildings on my tour but our guide didn't take us inside for whatever reason.

The only thing I know about the lab is that she had a chem lab on tuesdays from 2-6 p.m. (don't worry you can leave after you have finished). Spoke with D last night. I asked her if she has some free time will she come on and post to answer questions and she said yes. She will be able to give you a more detailed answer stayed tuned.
