Hi everyone,
I would like to start a science club for girls, because science happens to be my interest, my school doesn’t offer one, and I assume it’s necessary for the extracurricular section on a college application. Any ideas on what we should do & what activities I can organize?
Thank you very much
I don’t have any advice on your specific question but the fact that you are asking it makes me question why you are starting this club. If you see a need and make a club to fill that need because you really have a strong interest, that’s great. But, it seems that you are doing this because of college applications and that’s not a good reason to start a club. Starting a club is not necessary for college applications.
Now some more focused questions. Why does your school need a girls oriented science club? Is there an existing science club that is male dominated? Will they not let girls participate? If there really is a need for this, it seems you could work with other the girls at your school to come up with ideas of things to do. Do a survey among other girls who would join and see what activities they would most like to do. The best way to get people to join is to get them involved in the planning.
I would turn it around. The club is a means, not an end.
If there is something you want to do, and a new club is the best way to do it, set up a club. If you think founding a club for the sake of founding a club will impress Admissions, well, probably not so much.
I totally agree with what was said above- don’t focus on the college apps side of a club. However, to specifically answer your question you can do panelists where you invite someone from the field to answer questions from the audience. In addition, you can do science fair preparations. Hopefully, that helps!
You need to do something you are genuinely interested in… creating something just for college won’t last. There were a couple girls at my DD schools who created several clubs at school and a few teachers complained that they started it and never trained younger students to take over the club once they graduated and just made it hard to continue them.
