Basically, I want to show that I can take some initiative and start a club. We don't have a debate team, so I was thinking about that, but it would be very hard to organize. I mean, other schools compete with debate teams from competing schools, so I don't really know how all that works; I'm just a junior in high school who's trying to get something to put on his college app. Our school has a variety of clubs already, and I can't think of anything that I'm really interested in that there isn't already a club for. A community service club would look good if I started one, but there are already 2 of those. I don't know...

Please, help me think of a cool/good/helpful/whatever club that I can create that people would be interested in! I go to a competitive school, so people would want something that'd good look on there college apps if they were to join. :)

PS: There is already a club for so many things. Theres an "Indian Student Association," GSA, Community Service, Speech, Computers, Math, Science, Skiiing, anime, rock music, etc, I want something that isn't just based on interest, but based on something more broad, sort of like the Community Service thing. However, ALL suggestions are welcome! Thanks a lot!

If you're going to start a club in your school, don't do it because you want to beef up your college application. Do it because you're really interested in doing something that your school doesn't offer right now. Otherwise, you won't be able to put in true dedication. Putting it on your app should just be an unintended benefit.

Don't start a club just to put it on your application. If you're going to start one it should be because your'e genuinely interested. So basically, I just said the exact same thing as doarkface

That said, there's plenty of things you could start clubs about that people may not have necessarily thought of. Someone at my school is trying to start an acapella club this year. A fun one you could start is a mock congress, if your school doesn't already have that. It's purely schoolwide (though people can branch out to a local yla if they're that interested). We have Student Legislative Assembly, with 6 committees, that are based on committees in actual Congress. Each committee spends a lot of time writing a bill (or in the case of my school, two, but no other schools have flex days, as far as I know), and then we have a day in the spring where all the SLA kids basically have a legislative session and argue the bills. It's loads of fun. I'm a co-chair for the Environmental committee this year.

So yeah, if you want debate but in-school, that may be the way to go. And people come up with crazy arguments. We had a guy last year saying that microchipping criminals was the work of Satan or something, and pulled up biblical passages for it. It was hilarious. Another guy claimed to know the will of God regarding abortion the year before that. PM me if you want more info on that sort of thing.

Well I actually started the first CRICKET CLUB in So Cal for a high school, so something that is really rare, and unique. (this got a lot of attention, id say like 20 people immediately interested)

I kinda think maybe you shouldn't start a club... Is sounds like you are doing it more for colleges rather than yourself. It seems like you want to start a club just to automatically have a leadership position.

Why don't you just join one of the already established clubs, show detication (I know, I spelled it wrong!;)) and rise through the ranks. You said you wanted to start a community service club but there already were some... Join one of them!

Obviously, you shouldn't start a club if you have no clue what it should be!

I read your post thinking that everyone would be giving you topics and I'd be the only nay-sayer, but I guess I was wrong.

Don't start a club. I agree with everything that has been said so far. If you're not interested, it won't turn out well. And you probably will end up hating all the work it entails, so don't even try.

Tons of people have the same idea as you. Don't think that it will necessarily set you apart when colleges look at your application. Besides, even students can see through the attempt. I can name a few clubs that I know people have pulled out of their asses for college apps, and I don't look at those clubs and think "It's so inspiring to see kids taking action and starting their own groups." Half the kids ADMIT this to other kids, which is even dumber. Don't expect kids to be extra eager to help you out on your college resume when they have their own to worry about.

Also, just because in my mind these things kind of go together, don't ask people in charge of groups to put you in an authority position or even just outright lie and say you were in one. People who actually earned those spots worked hard to get there. If you don't have enough leadership positions it's your own fault, and like I said before you shouldn't expect people to just hand you something good for your applications. That wasn't directed at you specifically, but I hate it when I hear people do that and I wanted to complain about it.

i was going to start a club because i really wanted to start it. it was going to be a club for political moderates. then i realized that noone would join because in my school students are either hardcore democrats, hardcore republicans, or hardcore apathetic. noone would join and then i would hold no meetings and it would look just like a club for college. that led me to not forming it.

i wouldnt start a club if there is no interest because anything you or anyone else does for college will seem like a complete waste if/when you do not get into your top choice. however, anything done for interest will not seem like a waste of time regardless of what colleges admit you.

I had this idea a while back for a model al-qaeda. What youd do is organize attacks on MUN conferences and show up and throw stink bombs everywhere. Maybe you could try that out?

hahahahahha thats the worst idea for a club and i love it!
imo to all posters saying he shouldnt do it, he said he wants to be interested which is what you all say is the reason to be starting a club and you KNOW half the clubs started now are for the kids apps. Why can't OP be happy that it makes him look better?

Would a robotics team be enjoyable? I am part of a US FIRST Robotics team and it is my favorite EC. www.usfirst.org
Or do something crazy! Sure, it isn't awe inspiring but it'd be fun and show initiative. Make, like, a food lovers club and go on field trips to restaurants.

Wow, you guys took the completely wrong approach to my thread. A leadership position for college apps is by no means the only reason as to why I want to start a club.
