Science Competition Question

At our school science fair, I had a good idea but I didn't really put enough effort into it so I won't be going to state or anything. However, I think if I work at it it could be very good. I've got two questions.

Is there anything I can do with my project this school year, or summer, that might earn significant recognition?

I'm a junior, so by the time we have the next science fair I will have already submitted all my applications. Is there any way a college will look at the results of this, and if so until when? As in, if I win state in February or ISEF (its probably not that good, but maybe) in May, will schools maybe look at that? What will it be like if I am A. waitlisted by the school, or B. rejected ?

If you win state in Feb., you can send in an update to your application and they would take that into consideration for RD. If you win ISEF in May and you were waitlisted, you could again update and it might help get you off the waitlist. If you were rejected, it's a done deal and you can't submit updates and expect to be reconsidered.
